Review

Janalyn Voigt's review 4 of 5 stars bookshelves: self-help Surrendered Sleep, a Biblical Perspective offers statistics, solutions, scriptures, prayers and thoughts on insomnia from physician Charles W. Page. This book, written with the Christian reader in mind, may well challenge your preconceived ideas about sleeplessness. For example, might it sometimes signal a time of intimacy with God? With topics like poor diet, overeating, stress, inactivity and sleep disorders, there s something for every sufferer. While the author sometimes steps onto a soapbox while naming the societal ills and faulty mindsets that have escalated the problem of sleeplessness on a national level, it s clear his passion to help drives his zeal. This book, which is a cross between a textbook and a workbook, is well-written and never dry. If taken to heart, the penetrating questions in the sidebars can prompt positive change in a reader s life. I highly recommend Surrendered Sleep to anyone who suffers from insomnia. ~ Reviewed by Janalyn Voigt, author of novel books --JanalynVoigt

Kevin Sorensen 4 of 5 stars Read in August, 2011 Dr. Page provides sound biblical insight into how to help us sleep well. By providing a solid theology of sleep and of the God who does not, he assists the reader in learning how to develop a wise and receptive heart to God s work in our life. Not ignoring actual sleep maladies, the doctor nevertheless sees most of our sleep issues revolving around heart attitudes more than physical disorders. With a clear call to trust in God with all your heart, Page offers an excellent guide in how to use God s gift of sleep well. I appreciated Dr. Page s solid biblical foundations through the entire book. He grounds everything he recommends in the Scriptures. Yet, the author does not spend a great deal of time proof-texting. More often than not, Page uses larger portions of Scripture, set in their context, in order to draw out the principles for his writing. His work is also theologically anchored; he readily acknowledges God s sovereignty and the comfort this brings into our hearts. One of the features I also enjoyed were the many sidebars. Rather than simply quoting from the text itself (which, according to this reviewer, is an annoying publisher s gimmick to make the obvious stand-out and to fill more space on the page), each sidebar asks questions for reflection or further study a very helpful addition to this work. At the close of Surrendered Sleep, Dr. Page provides a sleep diary the reader may use to help determine sleep patterns and heart attitudes, as well as observe tendencies in your life that can be of service in producing better sleep. One final note: While the author is a medical doctor, I was grateful that he recognizes the spiritual element in our life of sleep. He does not ignore physical disorders when it comes to sleeping (he devotes a good chapter to these issues). However, he does acknowledge that our heart s attitude will so often determine our body s response and this can be reflected in how we sleep or don t! This was a very helpful book. I ll draw upon it more when I counsel with people who tell me they re so very tired. I recommend this book to you. --Kevin Sorensen

Midwest Book Review: On average, humans spend 33% of their lives asleep, yet it often comes with misery. Surrendered Sleep discusses with faith and wisdom on how to better approach sleep and what to consider as a Christian when seeking better sleep. From facing many sleep disorders and how to approach these issues in a giving way, Surrendered Sleep is a strong pick for those who want to fully understand sleep and want faith to guide them through the night.
