Product Description

This is the first book in the Surrender Trilogy. It has been recently re-edited. Katherine Anderson was living a dream life. She came from an influential family, had a successful career as a food critic, and was about to marry the man of her dreams. Her life suddenly takes a change for the worse when she finds her fiancé in the arms of another woman. Her dream wedding now cancelled, she tries to find herself in Italy, on a trip she was supposed to be taking with her new husband.

Massimo "Tony" Bertalucci has had his life destroyed by a cartel known to be trafficking black market olive oil out of Italy and around the world. While the cartel thought the entire Bertalucci family was dead and buried, Tony remains very much alive and determined to find a way to get his life back.

When Tony and Katherine’s worlds collide, she becomes Tony’s only hope of escaping Italy alive. What Katherine doesn’t realize is that this charming, unassuming Italian man is using her to save his own life. Will she be able to get back to the states safely, or will she be subjected to the same fate as Tony's family? Will Tony find a way to stop running? Or will he have to surrender his life to the cartel?

This book is full of suspense, betrayal, anxiety, tensions, romance, twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end. I fell in loved with Katherine and Tony. There were times through the book I was cringing and heart broken which I certainly was not prepare for but definitely worth it in the end.
Get ready to go for a ride of every page you turn from the beginning to end.
Enjoy and happy reading. Great book Jennifer.

This is a fast paced story about a woman who travels to Europe after a life changing event. Little did she know her dream vacation was about to be a disaster. I enjoyed the story line, it was entertaining and stayed at a good pace. I wasn't a fan of how quickly things moved along between our main character and her European beau. I'm not a fan of weaker female leads, especially when they make so many smart choices and then turn stupid when talking to a man. I felt the ending was a bit abrupt, we found out something only for it to end the entire book. Overall great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read! 25 January 2015
By Lynn Worton - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I was sent a book recommendation by a friend for this book. I read the blurb and became intrigued, so I decided to give this book a go. I am glad I did, because I loved it!

Katherine Anderson is a wonderful character. I liked her a lot. She is a food critic, with the power to make or break a restaurant or café. After coming home early and finding her fiancé in a compromising position, she decides to take the honeymoon trip to Italy in an attempt to figure out what to do. Meeting a charming Italian man wasn’t part of her plans, but Tony Bertalucci is unlike any other man she has met.

Massimo “Tony Lupito” Bertalucci is also a wonderful character. I liked this charismatic and charming man. His family has been involved in the production of olive oil for several generations, but after an attack by a black market cartel that left his family dead and him running scared, he sees Katherine as his salvation.

I started to read this story and found it to be an exciting and thrilling read, which hooked me from the first page. I could fully picture the story in my own mind with clarity, due to the descriptive writing of the author. I have never been to Italy, but the way it is described, especially the city of Florence, I felt like I was there. But, the descriptions also made me feel sad that I really wasn’t! I am seriously considering visiting Italy for real.

The story is told through not only Katherine’s and Tony’s points of view, but also through the eyes of an American FDA agent, Special Agent Daniel Thompson. I liked this agent, as he is dedicated and seems to be honourable. He and his Italian compatriot, Agent Andreo Manchetti are investigating the cartel and the connection to the Bertalucci family. The story is full of twists and turns, and has a villain that chilled my blood! He is completely psychotic, and his identity is a total shock! The feeling of terror, paranoia and disbelief that Tony feels is palpable and had me jumping at perfectly normal noises at home. It also had me feeling sorry for Katherine, as she had no idea through most of the story about the danger following Tony. But, once she is involved, I was completely in awe of her level head and inner strength. I am not sure if I would be so calm in a similar situation, but I suppose since her life had already imploded, she just took it in her stride. I did find myself in tears several times throughout the story, so a tissue may be required. I reached the end of the story and nearly screamed out loud in surprise, because there is a huge twist. I couldn’t wait to see what happens next, so I have downloaded Shattered, the next book in the trilogy, and I hope to start reading it as soon as possible.

Jennifer Burrows has written a fantastic, intense and suspenseful thriller. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow of the story is wonderful. I am definitely planning on reading more books by this author in the future.

Due to scenes of a sexual nature that are a little on the explicit side, as well as scenes of violence, I do not recommend this book for younger readers or those of a sensitive nature. However, I highly recommend this book to readers who love romantic thrillers, mysteries or suspense novels. – Lynn Worton

5.0 out of 5 stars I am a fan of this Trilogy and I can not wait for more 30 July 2014

** I received an ARC for an honest review.**

Well, let me start by saying that this story is so much different that any other book that I have read. It has an original storyline and it is very well written. The characters are very east to connect with. The book is written in third person and usually I am not really a fan of it, but it was definitely what made this story work. Instead just getting one side you get all sides of the story and having all sides is a must. There are so many things going on in this book that third person is very much appreciated.

I won't give any spoilers, but holy geez I did not see it coming. I was guessing like any normal person would and when the "Big Reveal" happened I did not see it coming. My thought process didn't even go there. It wasn't disappointing in the least. when this book really starts, we meet Kate after she has caught her cheating fiancee with another woman. She is taking what is supposed to be her honeymoon by herself and is feeling a little down and untrusting of everything and everyone she meets. I really liked Kate's personality. She is very strong if not a bit beat down, but considering what she just went through she should be a little off. I like that when she meets Tony she is feeling a little uncertain about him and gets a little bit of an uneasy feeling, although the attraction quickly starts to outweigh those first feelings. I could definitely feel the attraction from both their characters. That is what made the third person so great.

So, we already know that Tony is going through some stuff and is sort of on the run from his life. I like the little pieces of information that unfold as we find out more about Tony and the type of person he is and how he can not seem to stop his attraction towards Kate. Even if it is at the most inopportune time in his life. I too was a little weary of Tony at first because of his ulterior motive in befriending Kate, but I do like that he quickly comes to the realization that his original plan isn't going to work.

Now when this story really gets going I definitely had that gasping moment and couldn't wait to find out how it was all going to play out. I definitely did not see any of it coming at all. This story had me on my toes at all time just waiting to see what was going to happen.

The only bad thing that I have to say about this book is that I feel like the ending left me a little unsatisfied. I have a lot of questions and I want to know what happened. I am hoping that there will be some sort of novella with Tony's POV of things that happened during his absence. But I must say that I did love the epilogue and Kate's newfound outlook on life. I definitely think that this needs to be added to the good ole TBR.

4.0 out of 5 stars A romance with intrigue and suspense 31 July 2014
By Stephanie-The Boyfriend Bookmark - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Anxiety, tension, suspense and a bit of romance. This book was a lot to take in, but worth every minute of it. Though I would have appreciated a bit more on the romance side, I really enjoyed this book. It was full of suspense and intrigue and it certainly kept me on my toes until the very end!

Katherine was ready to start her happily ever after until she found her finance in their bed with another woman… Ok, so plans change. She has already paid for the Honeymoon, so she is going to take the trip. She is a strong and independent woman and she knows she will be just fine on this trip flying solo. Well… flying solo may be a bit of a falsehood when she spots him on the train. Suddenly he is everywhere she is and though part of it creeps her out, part of her is really intrigued. He’s hot, he’s kind and he has secrets.

Tony is not who he says he is, but he has a lot riding on people not finding out that he is alive until he can get out of Italy alive… and maybe figure out who destroyed his family. But what he isn’t expecting is anything more than to use Kate to help him in his grand mission. But webs are woven and things change and as fast as you can blink everything sifts. Everything changes.

The intrigue and suspense in this book was enough to keep me going and though I was not prepared in anyway for this book, it hit with tremendous force and cannot be missed. It was well written and has a lot going for it. I couldn’t out it down and I didn’t put it down. I fell in love with the characters, the local flavors. Sure there were moments when I was cringing and the big oh my moment was certainly a lot more than I was prepared for. Catch your breath and take deep breaths before opening this book. You have no idea what a crazy ride you are about to get on when you turn the page.

Surrender by Jennifer Burrows
3 out of 5 Stars

Have you ever read a book that had a very intriguing storyline but for some reason you can't ever forget your reading a book? That's how Surrender was for me. It starts out with a woman in love getting ready for her wedding and her honeymoon and ends with the Italian cartel and a daring adventure through Italy with a dark and handsome Italian heir who sets her world on fire and makes her question her doubts and fears.

I really wanted to know how it ended but it felt like I would never get there because I couldn't relax and let the book world take over. I think Burrows has come up with an unpolished gem, the third person narrative just keeps the reader at a distance from the characters and doesn't allow you to truly go to the world she's created. The characters are fairly well developed and the story speed works, but there are parts, especially between the agents working the case, that are very choppy and formulaic feeling. The types of dialogue you would expect to hear on some cop show but don't really "work" to keep the realism alive.

I had trouble rating Burrows work because I truly enjoyed the concept and plot, I just couldn't sink in and enjoy the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book that can be read as a stand alone. 30 January 2015

I bought Surrender as a recommendation in a review group I'm part of, it's a romantic thriller with lots of action and intrigue and just a hint of erotica to spice it up, without the monotony that so often comes with a lot of erotic fiction. I love the fact that this book is a full story, not a piece of a story published as a serial to make you buy more books, it is a full story in its own right and if the author hadn't written another book I would merely be disappointed that I wouldn't be able to interact further with the characters. There are a few loose ends which left me feeling that the author left it open for the future, without that: 'I. Hate. Cliffhangers!' feeling so many authors seem to love. It's a well written, fast paced unique story and fortunately, I have noticed there is another book in the series which I am heading off to buy now. Can't wait to see where she takes it next. There is some violence and adult content so this is one for older readers only. 4stars.
