A remastered version Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64), Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube) and Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) are included. You can even use joycons as a substitute for the Wii remotes in Galaxy if you wish.
While some of the games have aged noticably (Mario 64) they look great for what they are; pixel perfect and sharp renditions of classic 3D Mario games. Much nicer than playing the originals on a modern tv, which would look like blurry messes without spending a fortune modding out your old consoles.
Mario Galaxy is the stand out game of this trilogy and that is mostly because it is the newest, with the most modern controls, graphical textures and interesting space theme which let the developers get creative with ideas for levels.
Sunshine is a decent Mario game and perhaps the most forgotten out of all the 3D Mario games, so it is great that it got a second life through this compilation. The tropical island themed worlds and music are always fun to experience and it has an interesting water shooting and jetpack mechanic which you will need to use in conjunction with traditional platforming.
Mario 64 is Mario 64. If you have not played Mario's first 3D game you should absolutely give it a shot. I always enjoyed how the hub world was a castle and you jump into paintings which were all very different worlds such as an a sunken ship, haunted house and volcano. Controls and graphics have aged the most on this title, but remember the era it came from and enjoy it for what it is.
A lot of people argue that they should have included Super Mario Galaxy 2 and I do agree with this.
However we got the product that we did and I'm rating based on it's merits, not of what it could have been.
Some will complain about other things like Mario 64's aged controls, or Sunshines later stages absolutely nail biting difficulty, but they are remasters, not remakes. The games are presented how they always have been, but to look nicer on modern tvs.
This compilation is an excellent value set of games to keep you busy, relive your gaming past or even show your kids or younger siblings the Mario games you grew up with. As it was a limited release this game will only get harder to find as time goes on, so recommend buying now before it gets too difficult.
If anyone is questioning whether to get this title, the answer is pretty clear: Where do you find absolute hours of entertainment for the whole family that lasts days for under $80. Those parents like us that don't quite have the reflexes of old, this set of games acts as a great way of building up your game playing without having to be super effective on the controls. Love it dearly.
Super Mario 64
I'd only ever played the "remastered" 64 game on Nintendo DS when it came out as I didn't have the 64 console as a kid. From what I understand this is basically a straight port from the 64 version, which means it hasn't had some of the more annoying parts of the game removed or tidied up. It has some slight visual improvements though. But overall I thoroughly enjoyed replaying this game, so much so that I did the 120 stars (100% completion).
Super Mario Sunshine
I never got to play this iteration of the franchise when it originally came out on the GameCube, but always wanted to due to the neat, tropical aesthetics. I've got to say I was actually quite disappointed when I did get to play this version. The game has been updated to be widescreen which is a plus, and it does still look really nice visually. But the game feels so undercooked when compared to 64 which came before it.
Super Mario Galaxy
I had, and loved, this game when it originally came out on the Wii, and it holds up just as well today. It's such a fun game with beautiful, filled out levels and worlds for you to explore. You use the gyro/point-ability of the joy-con or pro controller in place of the original wii-mote functionality to collect the star bits, etc. in the various levels. It felt a bit clunky at first, but quickly becomes second nature after some playtime.
In summary I'd definitely recommend this to all Super Mario fans - especially as it's a limited run of copies.
