I'm a female and I've worn a large in Outback type hats I've bought in the past and took a chance with the size on this one in large... it fit perfect and in proportion to my stocky body. I let my housemate try it on (she has a smaller head and petite/medium build and has worn size medium hats in the past) and it fit her fine as well with a tiny adjustment and also looked in proportion to her body. I would say they don't come big at all-- they run somewhat small. It looked even better on her, I'd say.
Definitely a unisex hat. I like the strip of ventilation around the hat. The crown is all nylon and the strip of mesh around it giving ventilation is polyester... gives it a lightness and is guaranteed to keep your head cool. There is a pull-cord in the back you won't even notice to adjust the head size. All very well-made. It's a very light hat. Perfect for an outdoor activity I do regularly. Also love the chin strap as it's pretty windy around here.
I think the only thing I would point out is that this color, Tan/Chaparral, looks maybe a shade or two darker tan/beige than the creamier look in the photo on the product page. Looks like my light khaki pants. I don't really mind but it was a noticeable difference.
So far, I would buy this product again. The tag on it says it's supposed to float in water and is water and stain resistant. I hope that means it will wash well when I get to that. If it doesn't hold up, I will update.
