While I think Summer of Sorcery isn't as good as Soulfire, it won't disappoint you. As one would expect from Steven Van Zandt, the songwriting is excellent and each song illustrates a story with a summer feel. I'm glad the booklet contains the lyrics because when you read them you can see the meticulous writing involved. Unlike most of today's music, every song is detailed both lyrically and musically. The Disciples of Soul play with energy and rock throughout the album. Little Steven's voice has improved dramatically through the years and it shows here. I believe the female background singers could have been used a little more sparingly, sometimes they overwhelm the songs they are featured on.
The standout tracks are: Superfly Terraplane (a scorching guitar solo), Love Again, Soul Power Twist, A World of Our Own, and the tour de force title track (featuring a terrific sax solo.) Vortex, I Visit the Blues, and Communion are also strong songs. The weakest ones for me are: Gravity, Education, Party Mambo and Suddenly You. Soulfire is my favorite album of the past 5 years or more, but Summer of Sorcery doesn't meet up to its high standards. Perhaps I need to listen to it more and will revise my rating in the future. Overall, a solid effort from Little Steven and The Disciples of Soul and probably the album of the year. They are a great live band; I saw them on the last tour and plan to see them again this time. I recommend everyone to do the same.
