QUITE A GOOD COLLECTION
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2017Verified Purchase
Overall quite a good collection. It's difficult to please everyone with a compilation album and personally speaking I wouldn't have selected ' Birth Of An Accidental Hipster', or 'Tapioca Tundra' as I really don't rate them but other people may take a different view.

Me.

A somewhat pointless collection but still pleasant to play on a Sunday. A defect on vinyl during 'porpoise song' only noticed when I played the whole lp..

Another pleasant value CD

With an accompanying sticker on the shrink-wrap that declares this CD as a ‘Specially-priced 12-track collection’, and whilst 1967 may have been declared as ‘The Summer of Love’ (but not until years after), this cash-in from Rhino is a bit of a misnomer in trying to push this collection as the psychedelic side of the group.
Yes, the included songs are good but other, more worthy contenders, are notable by their absence. Then again, and the same could be levelled at any compilation, it is what it is irrespective of what me or anyone else thinks and commercial activities need to be considered. Monkees die-hards will obviously have everything here (I did buy it as there are some of us who must have every release whatever it contains) and even those who dip their toes in occasionally may well be familiar with some of the dozen songs.
And that’s what makes rating this CD so difficult. It’s a bargain price (though just 12 songs is a bit mean), so that’s a plus point, and the songs (rather, eight or nine) are top notch. It’s not a hits collection either, as only six songs here appeared on singles; three A-sides and three B-sides, but there are plenty of ‘Greatest Hits’ compilations available for those who want such a thing. I guess this should be looked at as something for those who might want to investigate the more colourful side of the group. Having said that, considering songs such as 'Porpoise Song', 'Pleasant Valley Sunday', 'Star Collector' and 'Love is Only Sleeping' are worthy of any group from the period, it has to be a worthwhile purchase for anyone. It's a shame Davy isn't represented more than once and Peter is virtually absent.
I’m quite taken with the cover. Rhino was never going to spend too much on it but when many of these releases seem to come in a sleeve that looks as if it’s been designed by K-Tel, the one here gives a clue what to expect.
