If you read the product description "a tale of treachery and death, love and lust" this is just what you get. A page turner story that should sell well in airport bookshops - a great way to spend some of the many hours flying if you are going from Australia to anywhere but New Zealand. The author has a picturesque description. His depiction of a thunderstorm includes "clouds slammed together spawning erratic white electric claws that cracked and snaked the air, raking and groping their way across the sky before splitting and diving in search of anything to conduct the life force back to earth...". The text is loaded with clever wordplay, humour and dialogue that flows (a talent in itself).
If I have a criticism it is that many of the characters are somewhat two dimensional. The gruff but honest copper, the doubting, bewildered vicar and the publican with a heart of gold (who is at least female). The villains have no redeeming features and the heroes missing only the horse and shining armour. But if you want a rollicking good read, this is worth the purchase. And for a book set in the Queensland cane fields, there was no mention of a toad.
I am looking forward to the next book from Mr Sealey.

Gripping right from the first page. So raw in patches that I was left gasping.
You'll be, like me totally connected to the raft of uniquely Australian characters. Five stars!

A rip roaring ride of corruption murder and mayhem in Queensland cane fields. Great characters with lots of twists and turns.

This is a cracker of a yarn. Every time you think the story is coming to a conclusion, a new aspect, a new character is introduced. Keeps you guessing almost all the way through.
Personally too many books nowadays are little more than a few hundred pages. I love a good long story where I can lose myself for a couple of days. This book certainly fulfilled that couldn't put it down.
