Product Description

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling first book in The Wedding Pact series by Denise Grover Swank.

Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean--a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.

With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane--a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.

Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

Another winning series by the very creative writer Denise Grover Swank. The title and front cover pretty much sums up what the book is. However, what I wasn't anticipating on was the fantastic array of wacky characters. Grandma was my favourite. I can't wait to get into Kevin's story to see her and knickers back in action again. I'm in awe how Denise can switch between books and make us love each and every one with as much passion as the last. I just want more and more. I have to pace myself with these books because I can so easily get wrapped up in the book world that I tend to forget about my responsibilities in the real world here and now. I also wasn't sure how I would respond to other characters after my Rose bond. However, this author has eased us into another world where I care about these characters as well. Now I'm ready to adventure on with Megan's friends and see were that leads me.

This was decently written and edited, and I enjoyed some aspects of the story and read it to the end because it has many good moments. Sadly there were quite a few things that grated and premises that were too far-fetched even for romantic comedy purposes. I laughed at Josh's first zany encounter with the eccentric Gram, but then it was just too much Gram - the photography in the bathroom, just yuk; for me there were too many steamy encounters - I get it already, Josh and Megan are hot for each other. Before the steam clouded my view, I did start to sympathise with Megan's difficult relationship with her mother, but really - what damaged person doesn't let her mother know the wedding's off when partial refunds are a at least possibility? Another problem - the cabin staff would have insisted either Josh or Megan be moved to cabin staff seating, and she be observed closely throughout the flight from a risk management and a customer service point of view, especially in first class. Despite these minor annoyances, I was still reading and enjoying until the biggest problem arose: the inconsistent patent stories.

Megan has an overbearing mother, one she escaped from & one she has to tell that the $50,000+ wedding she has orchestrated is off. Jay cheated on her & she finally had the guts to call it off.

So on the plane heading home, with her tail between her legs, she meets Josh - her substitute groom. However something also fell into his lap when he met Megan. So their journey begins, sometimes funny, sometimes sad.

But will love prevail in the end? Read it to find out. I wasn't disappointed & I actually really enjoyed this story.

We're introduced to other characters who form part of further books & no doubt we'll catch up with these two.

PS I forgot to mention Gram lol 😂 you will too!

The Substitute is a thoroughly delightful read that will make you fall instantly fall in love. My favourite heroines are strong women and Megan is great - independent and self assured, but like many women, a complete mess in the company of her family. A domineering mother, eccentric grandmother, protective brother and two loyal besties round out the supporting cast and add to the fun. And Josh, her leading man is also my kind of guy. Beta all the way. No chest beating arrogance here. Just a man completely bowled over by an amazing woman. The Substitute wasn't a page turner for me, but rather a slow and indulgent read. Great sex scenes too - romantic but not cheesy.

This is the first book I've picked up by this author and over all it was a quick easy read.
It's not one that wowed me or that I forced myself to finish. Not something i'll remember much off a couple weeks from now unfortunately.
That's not to say it didn't have good bits, like Gram, she was really the only humorous parts for me.
But honestly when you have friends like Blair, who needs enemies! She was very cold and even her "caring" about someone came across cold-hearted and I'm really not a fan. So much so that I wont be purchasing her book, no interest in a HEA for her sorry, maybe Libby.
An easy read to waste a couple hours on.

I Loved, Loved, Loved this book. I started it yesterday afternoon and finished it last night. I could not put it down.
A really good light hearted read that made me laugh with tears in my eyes.
I cannot wait to read the rest of the series and spin off series.

I have just finished reading this book, and at the moment I think that it is one of the best books that I have read. Big statement I know, but I just could not put it down. Loved Megan and Josh and all the rest of the characters that made this book so good.

First of all, this has adult content, not that there is anything wrong with it, I just was not expecting to see it.

I loved the story, it was funny... I just live the grandmother. What a free spirit she has. I love how everything happend. Scandal and mistrust.

Now about the adult parts.. I can't say because I flipped through that, it's not what I wanted to read. But the rest of the novel was great.
