This isn't just a series trying to come along and try to copy harry potter. The only similarity is that there is a school of magic. And i loved every minute of it. It really stands out on its own as a fascinating world, interesting and believable characters that you can literally see in your minds eye, the greatest praise is given when you forget you forget that you are reading a book, or kindle in this case, its storytelling at its greatest when you don't want to put the book down because you don't want to miss anything by going off and doing other daily life things lol

I am a scientist and an old man and a rationalist and I shouldn't like books like this but to my surprise it is a fine fantasy and I have enjoyed the series and this book.
I am a Chris Nuttall nut and buy ever thing he writes. Some are amazingly bad books, but most are exactly what my mind needs when I am trying to fill the midnight hours. He writes so many books and carries diverse series through to excellent conclusions that he is one of my "Go to authors".
Just buy every Chris Nuttall book and know that you will bog down and reject 10% of them as rubbish but the rest will impress you and take you on some wonderful journeys.

Emily faces new challenges back at Whitehall. The thing that makes this world enjoyable and authentic was the several plotlines Chris had going. You could almost see Emily beginning to be overwhelmed by it all. I can see a time in the future where she'll come a cropper though.

Looking forward to reading the fourth in the series. Definitely Harry Potter with a great modern twist and references to current day.

Really enjoying these books. Harry Potteresque, with interesting ideas about what a young woman would do finding herself in an alternate reality.
Pros : Most of the main characters are well rounded, i enjoy Nuttall's world building and the challenges the characters face each book are still interesting and new even in book 4 (this is book 3).
Cons: I sometimes find myself wanting to shake the main character for being so naive and/or unthinking in the consequences of her actions, but she is a teenage girl alone in an alternate reality.
I also wish sometimes she faced some more serious consequences to her actions, but everything seems to end out very well for her despite the deaths of others. Maybe i'm just reaching that stage of my life when the younger generation irritates me.
There are some grammatical and editing errors but they are few and far between and don't impact the story at all.
If you are looking for an easy read which still has an interesting plotline, quite intriguing world building and reasonable characters this is for you. So far i have enjoyed 3 different series by this author and his works only seem to be improving.

Enjoyable but full of irritatons

I've gone on before about the bad American spelling that should not be in a book written by a Scot so enough said. The overuse of smirk drives me nuts too as often it is so inappropriate! It still bothers me that the main punishment at this boarding school is spanking as these students are university age almost and it is very wrong. However I feel Emily is very immature for her age, why on Earth does she want to introduce dangerous things like guns and gunpowder? There are so many better things like antibiotics and flushing toilets and her lack of concern about people eating cats makes her very unlikeable.
Were I to meet someone like her at school I would hate her. That said many of the twists and turns in the story did hold my interest, but I don`t like the heroine much at all.

Good solid read that makes you think.

Another good book in this series. It is often a complicated story with many twists and turns. I enjoy this as the obvious answers in any story do not allow the reader to think about the underlying things that can make a story so good. I will buy the other books in the series.

Another great adventure following Emily and her friends. I love the relationship with Emily and Barb and her new 'pet' is a brilliant addition to the story line.

These novels are amazing and as usual I stayed up all night to finish this one! Unusually for this genre I really cannot fault this book - a sophisticated, grown-up writing style, believable and very well-developed characterization, and an intricate and plausible plot. More soon please!
