I am a serious historical fiction fan, and this book was perfect! Why do I say that? For me, it's because of the meticulous research that supports the story, which in itself is a phenomenal tale. Set primarily during the early 1900's, the book follows the story of an immigrant's fight to get to the United States from Poland, and his battles to survive and eventually succeed in the industrial era of Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas.
The timing of this book could not be better given the current debates over immigration. This story demonstrates the challenges faced by those who arrived in the US prepared to do back-breaking work in factory mills and who helped build the country before, during, and after the World Wars. The genius of the tale is that it employs the story of one family--the Musials--to provide an in-depth and moving story of industrial America.
After reading the book, it is no surprise to me that Donora. ,Pennsylvania has produced many fantastic athletes, including Stan Musial. There was something about the place that seemed to produce steel spines as well as steel itself.
Great book, definitely put it on your summer reading list!
