Bard Papegaaij’s book ‘A String of Pearls’ is the kind of practical read I need right now to think clearly and it is proving to be a very good read indeed. It’s about making the most of one’s choices and decisions in life. Being able to create a better future enticed me and Bard provides an approach that is flexible, personal and as alive as possible, short of being in the same room together.
I began with a quick read through and then came back to create the story of my own life experiences. First I chose to reflect and write about an event from many years ago that has shaped my life profoundly. Now I can’t wait to go back over my past memories to ‘find the shiny pearls’; the highlights of my life’s story that give me a sense of purpose, meaning and passion.
This is the string of pearls representing the precious times when everything came together perfectly - physically, mentally and emotionally - like an athlete hitting their stride. Identifying these pearls - past experiences of ‘flow’ - means you can then construct and test out the future pearls you want to create.
Bard talks through key questions of what is desirable, feasible and viable to design our future, planning for action and making it happen. It delights me no end and is priceless to consider how the three things you most want to do (your priorities) will further your story and that obligations are best managed with acceptable minimum energy and quality.
