5.0 out of 5 stars The I-Team is back! 6 November 2013

This story is incredible! I've been concerned that my review would not do it justice. Then a very wise friend and best selling author said to me "Pat, write what you feel."

First of all, if you haven't read First Strike, stop what your doing and go read it. It is a prequel for Striking Distance, a short novella, and helps things fall in to place very quickly, not to mention a steamy read!
Javier Cobray is a battle hardened SEAL who for the last 18 months has been on a personal mission to eradicate the al-Qaeda cell that kidnapped and murdered a journalist, Laura Nillson, with whom he had a brief erotic weekend in Dubai. Javi only had a couple days with her, and it was supposed to be "no strings" but when he left her, he knew he would be looking her up. Until that day he saw on live T.V. her brutal kidnapping, a deadly shoot out, and the claim by her captors she had been executed.

Laura Nillson never knew the name of the "tall SEAL" and his team who seemed to drop out of the sky, and raid the al-Qaeda compound where she was held. All she knew was that she heard American voices, and she had to get to them. They treated her with utmost respect, but the tall SEAL was forever in her memory. He carried her onto the helo, gave her a blanket, and happily punched her tormentor when he said evil intimidating things to her. She was free.
Two years later, she is physically healthy and working for the I-Team in Denver, specializing in veteran's issues. This is her way of paying back her rescuers. There is a death threat from her former captor hanging over her head, and a heartbreaking secret she can tell no one. Nightmares still haunt her, but she falls back on her grandmothers words "Everything gets better with time." Then at a barbecue, with friends and spouses of I-Team members, she sees Javi again.

This novel is filled with danger, suspense, revenge, old friends and a lot of love. I went through waves of emotions while reading this, always having tissues near. I have read every one of Ms. Clare's I-Team novels, some multiple times, and listened to the audio versions. In my opinion, this one is the best yet. It is with great pleasure I highly recommend this novel. It deserves so much more than five stars. I guarantee I will be re-reading this story.

Thank you for the advice my friend......I have written what I feel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of action -great heroine with alpha-male; a fun read 7 November 2013

*** don't read the reviews if you haven't read First Strike. I recommend you read that first ***

Laura Nilsson is a famous broadcast journalist who is not only sexy and smart, but is known for her ethical and heartfelt personal storylines. She isn't working in the industry for fame, but to actually report stories that matter. Stories are that she was decapitated by an Al-Qaeda splinter group since she was reporting on murder and abuse of women around Islamabad.

Javier Corbray is a Navy SEAL that is on a mission that ends up rescuing Laura.
In the book, First Strike - Laura and Javier had spent a sex-filled weekend together that left a greater impression on each other than expect. It was supposed to be 'no strings attached'...
When those two get together - the love story begins again.

Ugh - it's difficult to talk about this story without giving stuff away. So I won't. But I enjoyed the twists and turns, even though I found it pretty predictable. The secret, the bad guy is a good guy, the good guy is a bad guy etc. But I enjoyed the ride.

Laura is super strong and independent. What she went through was unconscionable. It would break most anybody. But she survived and is beginning to thrive again. She never makes excuses for her actions, her weaknesses nor her fears. She addresses each one and works to get over these obstacles. But she does it with heart.
on top of that, she is smart. She works to solve the mystery of the killer, etc. She is tenacious without being annoying and she never says 'hah! I am so smart and you are dumb'. She is all heart.

It's rare for me, but I liked the heroine better than the hero. Javier was cool, sexy, strong, brave, knows his stuff - alpha-male. Where most alpha-males are pretty sexy to me - Javier was a bit of a mix. He was completely at Laura's beck and call (in a good way) to help her in any way that he could. He didn't push for sex, nor a commitment. Good, right?
But I felt like with him being a gun-toting huge guy that could kick anyone's butt; I didn't feel like he was helping her as much emotionally, except for the fact that he could physically protect her.
Don't get me wrong, who would turn a Javier-like person out of their lives...uhm, no one. But he just fell a wee bit short for me. Laura is so incredibly strong - that I expected Javier to have a bigger character presence than mainly 'boyguard'. He did help her recover emotionally, but I felt like she could have done that on her own as well - she is THAT strong.

But overall, I really enjoyed the plot. It was fun to get all angry and indignant over various events, feel the 'hmmm, something isn't right...' and make guesses on what is REALLY going on. The plot flowed pretty easily without things seeming too OTT nor rushed or contrived.

I liked the technical talk between the various law bodies. Enjoyed the characters from the other books making appearances, kinda wish it was more; but it was cursory. Didn't get into their characters much.

The ending had two endings. One is near future, the other was FAR future. Yeah, I am a sucker for long epilogues (in length and in time).
This did have a very big HEA.
no Cliffhangers in this one.
no big misunderstandings with characters weeping over themselves or being pissed at the other.
Just big alpha-males going around saving people.
Smart females (who are the REAL alphas) going around doing great things.
Bad people getting their just desserts.
Good people redeeming themselves and doing even better things.
Funny grandmothers/aunts.
Cute children.
(ooh, don't remember any pets)
Lots of shooting, explosions, bleeding and hitting.

A fun read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy...very heavy. 9 November 2013

First off, I think Pamela Clare writes fantastic stories. Her hero's and heroines are always human, warm and conscientious. I have enjoyed all her I Team books and eagerly await her stories. Striking Distance is no different. I recommend her prequel to this story to understand Javier and Laura's story a bit before all the drama.
After I finished this story, I felt..well, uncomfortable. Not because it wasn't a great read, because it was. Not because I didn't like the main characters, because I did. They were caring , warm individuals who had been through a lot, and were scarred because of it. They dealt with their pain gracefully and with self effacing humor.
The plot..well, the plot was complicated, but Ms. Clare did her very best to make sure everything was spelled out so you could follow it, but at some point, there is just ALOT going on...when you really need to concentrate on who is who, and what is what...that is my signal that this is going to be COMPLICATED. There are about 5 different plots going on. Javier's possible PSTD, The security detail who compromised Laura, The Terrorists who are after Laura, the big secret Laura is keeping, Laura's PSTD, the constant media after them, ect.. be prepared to sit awhile.
Javier is a good guy, a SEAL, who's last mission went south and the aftermath of that, Laura's rescue, and his feelings about her and what she went through. He sticks with her through it all but you somehow feel he is unfinished. He loves her, he protects her, he is considerate of her PSTD but you don't really get a sense of why he is doing all this..a few things are discussed about his past, but not really in any depth..its like his past is autopiloted in some way ( if that is even a word).
Laura.OMG Laura. This poor woman. She has gone through things that no human should go through, much less a woman. Her treatment by her captures is down right horrible. I wont say what happened to her, but if this were real life, this woman would be a babbling wreck. If even a couple of the things she went through happened to me, I wouldn't even be able to function. But not Laura! Therapy, love and time have gotten her back on her feet. Not to mention Javier- but who am I to discount the human spirit and she has plenty of that.
My number one reason for not giving it a full five stars is that this story is HEAVY. There is a HEA but at some major cost. Sacrifices abound here and its not the prettiest sight. I recommend it but bear in mind..its not fluffy.

Don’t start reading this book if you haven’t read “First Strike”.

The prequel of the book was focused on the fling between Javier and Laura, their hot sex weekend in Dubai and their promise that no strings would be attached to this sizzling weekend.

“First Strike” was the perfect start off for “Striking Distance”. Here the author took her time to develop the main characters, to show how their lives had changed in the meantime and how these experiences changed their point of view regarding their priorities and choices in their lives. This was masterly and perfectly done.

I absolutely enjoyed this book! Tension, suspense and action. Pamela Clare at her best!

There was one little “thing” that bothered me and nearly “cost” the book one star: I would’ve preferred if the word “terrorist” were used in a more conscious way. In any case, this word describes a very specific state of mind and actions that are based on these beliefs. Yes, no doubt, what happened to Laura/Klara was utterly and inconceivably horrible. But to lump all Al-Nassar family members together, including innocent women and children and denote them as terrorists seems a bit too trivial for my taste.

However, I overlooked above detail completely because I was totally absorbed by the atmosphere the author created. The love and dedication between Laura and Javier impressed me deeply, their sacrifices were awe-inspiring. The HEA was so much more than in many other books.

Thank you Pamela Clare!

PS. If you liked this book, try “Cry No More” by Linda Howard.
5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!!! 2 February 2016

This book was the best of an already superb series, making it Phenomenal! I read a great deal and can say that since reading this series, so far, I have become a huge fan of Pamela Clare.
Never has a book touched my emotions on so many levels, I would even go so far as to say this is one of the most well-written books I have had the pleasure of reading! All the books in the I-Team series have a strong plot and well developed character's. Her words and sentence structure are so well and smoothly written that reading her work is truly an emotional journey that makes it easy for the reader to enjoy and impossible to put down. The prologue in "Striking Distance" gives a heartbreaking introduction to the story that is just long enough to give us the facts we need, but still develops a strong sense of empathy and connection with the main characters that only grows stronger as the story develops. There are so many highs and lows as the author guides you through the story of Laura and Javier's journey, that you will find it impossible not to feel the intensity of their passion and love for one another, but nor will you be likely to ever forget the depth of their pain. Character's from past books in the series are well blended into the story line and it was fun to see her continue the "brotherly" banter between Darcangelo and Hunter because as the wife of a retired Marine Officer I truly understand the depth of brotherhood and love it expresses, which just continues to show the authors ability to bring her character's to life.
Just as you think the story about Laura and Javier is coming to an end and they are finally going to have their HEA, the author blindsides the reader with a well written plot twist you won't be expecting, but will applaud after you have read it. Before the author finally ends her story with a HEA she will have taken you on a journey that is as unexpected as it is expected, leaving you with emotional whiplash that will make you feel raw and utterly drained, but ready to go on all over again!
I highly recommend you keep a box of tissues handy at all times while reading this story because I dare anyone to read it without shedding a copious amount of tears!
Pamela Clare, "Striking Distance" (I-Team novel, book 6) is one of your finest books I have had the pleasure to read and makes it easy to understand how you achieved so much in your journalism career (actually, just reading your books period is enough to understand your success). If you wrote this well for the newspaper's you worked for I can honestly say that I would have considered it a privilege and myself lucky to to work for and learn from you ! I wish you continued success in your future endeavors and anxiously await to hear of a new series from you. Michelle Parsons.
