An early novel by one of our greatest science fiction writers
For British pilot Dale Curtance, the Keuntz Prize - to be awarded to the first person to take a spaceship to another planet and back - is the ultimate challenge. Not only has he to build a ship to survive the journey, assemble a top-notch crew and choose a destination, he's also got to beat the Russians and Americans.
Soon the GLORIA MUNDI blasts off from Salisbury Plain, bound for Mars. There's only one problem - a stowaway called Joan. Not only does her presence wreck calculations and threaten the mission, but her tale suggests that Mars may be a more dangerous destination than they ever expected.

About the Author
John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Benyon Harris was born in 1903. He tried a number of careers including farming, law, commercial art and advertising, and started writing short stories in 1925. During the war he was in the Civil Service and then the Army. Not up to the standards of his later books.

Although this was written in the 1940s and has some of HG Wells themes, it feels rather clunky with a lot of philosophizing which wasn’t necessary and detracted from the story. The main female character was clever and resourceful but the men were a bit Neanderthal. I guess it was far sighted for it’s day and probably my hindsight has hindered my enjoyment. It isn’t anywhere as good as Day of the Triffids or The trouble with Lichen.

Shows its age

A not-too-thrilling early novel from John Wyndham. It was probably cutting-edge in its time but it lacks any of the tremendous feats of imagination that marked his later novels. The only daring bit is the alien sex in the last couple of chapters.

Early novel originally written under a different name

I love John Wyndham but I think he was still learning his craft when he wrote this. It’s a bit clunky and dated and the story a bit simplistic. There are about 10 Wyndham books I would try before this one.

Poor compared to his other works

Really uninteresting. Read Robinson's Red Mars or The Martian if you're interested in Mars. For classic Wyndham, far better with Triffids for example.
