P.S. I would not call this a guard. I think that a source of misinformation and confusion. It is just a piece of nylon. If if were a piece of plastic or other hard material, I would associate that with a guard.
His thumbsucking was so bad that he developed callouses on the bottom of his thumb (where his teeth sinks into the finger) also his permanent teeth were not coming out properly and our dentist warned that he'd need a mouth appliance to help save his teeth and gums from being deformed if he didn't stop. He was getting sick a lot as he was getting infections from sucking dirty thumbs after playing. I felt hopeless.
Saw this product and was impressed by what the reviewers had to say. I did find it a bit pricey but I decided to give it a try. I really did not expect it to work for us, my son sucked his thumb from uterus (have ultrasound pics) to now. Before ordering it I spoke to my son about it and he agreed to try it for one (1) month.
It came and at first he was excited, but when it went on (at bedtime his hardest time) there were many tears and begs to remove it. He fell asleep and during the night stuck his thumb (with the thumbuster) in his mouth, only to reject the thumb, it appears the material was not conducive to sucking.
This went on for the first three nights. I washed it every morning so it would be dry for the nights.
By the end of the 1st week he was not putting his thumb into his mouth during sleep. The 2nd week he willingly put it on every night and did not suck his thumb.
Midway into the second week he had an impromptu sleepover by grandma (without the thumbuster) I was worried that all our hard work had been undone, that one night. However he did well and did not suck his thumb! I was a proud mama. I made him wear it for 2 more weeks just to be sure and is happy to report gone are the days of this habit! Thank you thumbusters!!!!
It works but the child needs to be on board to try!
My son wanted to stop but needed a gentle reminder at bedtime or when watching movies. He loved this and was able to stop sucking his thumb within a couple weeks (he's 8).
My daughter just sucked her thumb whenever it wasn't on and it really didn't seem to help her stop, but I think that was manly because she didn't want to stop. We may try it again though.
I only gave it 3 stars because I think it is quite overpriced for what it is. It looks totally gross/dirty/shredded after a couple days. Sure, you can wash it easily by hand and it dries quickly, but it still looks stained and the fabric snags on everything.
