That the next book is not yet out and worse.... ***Spoilers***
He married someone else and the main female lead is about to be under the thumb of a bad guy.
I don't mind dark, hell I have enjoyed romances about serial killers but this....
I have a big FU for the author.
Mabye some people are into this type of torment but I am not down.
Thank goodness I got this on special.
The only reason this gets 3 stars is in concession to the fact that the writing is good.
Story and Grays book broke me. Their enemies to frenemies to lovers to the clusterf**k after! I was not expecting this cliffy. I don’t know if I would have read the book if I had known it had a cliffy. But OMFG it was everything!
WOW! I don’t know what to do now.... how can I wait 2 months for the next book.....I’ll just lay here in the foetal position in the corner till late May!
Holy guacamole... this was an epic ride! In a way, this kind of reminded me of Downtown Abbey. Secrets, intrigue and a clear hierarchy.
Grayson is definitely cold and calculated and yet I felt sorry for him because he is always on the offensive, waiting for people to take from him. It's sad that he is suspicious of everyone and their motives. I continually went back and forth: I like him, I hate him, I like him, I hate him, swoon and repeat.
Story. Wrong place, wrong time... or was it? She's lived her life by hiding in the shadows but I feel as though she was always meant to stand out. She is trying so hard to protect herself from people who only want to use her.
The two of them have more in common than they first realised. They want to resist their attraction and yet they are drawn together. Gray wants Story, desires her and yet he actually loves someone else. Story is trying so hard to keep her distance from him because she knows they were never meant to be and yet her crush begins to grow. I experienced some whiplash from all the back and forth between Grayson and Story. They seem to lash out to protect themselves but they reveal bits and pieces of themselves more and more to each other. And then there was a moment were Grayson turned into such a jacka**. I was like, what are you doing!!!
The ending was not what I was expecting. I think that's because I was hoping for one thing to happen but something else did instead. But it can't be the end, I don't want it to end! This was an incredible story and completely engaging from the start right until the end. Mary Catherine Gebhard twisted me up and gutted me. I was crying in so many places and wanting to scream in others. My heart was squeezed and my soul feels torn. I loved this story so much even though it left me drained and emotional from all the angst. I think I have found a new author to follow.
The book did take me a little bit at the start to understand, seeing as this is my first book from this author, and the second in the series, I had to work out in my head who was who as it ran along the timeline of book one. It can definitely be read as a stand-alone but to better understand some happenings it's best to read book one first. But as soon as I clicked everything into place, oh my goodness, this book is PURE magic.
Gray... oh sweet Gray. At first I wanted to slap him good and proper, but dang did he win my heart! Really, he didn't have to try all that much. He is Just amazing! Story is his perfect counterpart. She is everything he needs, the ying to his yang, the other piece of his soul. I just love these two together. Their chemistry had butterflies exploding in my stomach, my heart racing. It was like fire.
I could seriously talk to you about this book alllllll day. I cried all the tears in the last 20% of this book. The emotions swirling, the hearts breaking, gosh this book... You have no idea. I wasn't ready for it and I am sure you are not either, but I HIGHLY recommend you read it. So much angst, so much torment, so much heart. My heart is not the same after this, and I would not have it any other way.

This is my first read by Mary Catherine Gebhard. I’m seriously conflicted. I enjoyed reading this book, which was a REAL SLOW BURNER. But then again, I hated many other things about it. For me, it lacked ‘believability’ and was a bag of contradictions. I’ll explain.
A very modern story with very stone age undertones
First off, the bullying that Grayson put Story through harked back to slavery times and made for very uncomfortable reading for me. The story is set in the 21st Century, yet in parts, I had to stop and wonder is it a historical romance? How could the Crownes and their ilk get away with oppressing and treating their house help the way they did?! And in this day and age, who actually calls their house help a servant?!? The arranged and forced marriage thing also didn’t ring true given the time it’s set in.
Very unlikeable H/h and supporting characters
I felt Grayson was spineless and only cared about himself, flip-flopping and playing mind games not just with Story but his so-called fiancee. I agree, there were glimpses of a sensitive nature but overall, I couldn’t stand him. But I also loathed Story, Lottie, Grayson’s siblings and friends in equal measure. I felt Story and Lottie were pathetic and weak with the way they continued to desperately hanker after Grayson the playboy. Story, in particular, turned my stomach with the way she literally lay down and begged Grayson to abuse and use her. She was either stupid and/or a glutton for punishment.
Why Story didn’t just leave beggars belief!
As far as I understood, Story went to the same schools as the Crownes, I take it fully paid for by her wealthy ‘owners’. This tells me that she had some form of education, yet she kept wondering where she would go if she were to leave, like as if she had absolutely no other alternative, which I refuse to believe.
An undeclared cliffhanger - gggrrrrrr!!!
I ABSOLUTELY HATE cliffhangers, especially one I stumble on right at the end of a book. If there’s one thing I’d put to authors, it’s never to neglect to disclose to the reader all the vital information they need to know, including if a book has sequels. I now feel like I’ve been duped and because I do want to know how it all ends, I’ll have to buy the next book. If this were a standalone HEA, I’d likely not ever read books by this author again.
Would I recommend this book? I think I would because it’s as infuriating as it is gripping. I was personally gripped by the appalling things I was reading and actually wanted to find out more. What that says about me, I honestly don’t know. I’d say you’re best reading it and making up your own mind.
Good God almighty!! This book! What a brilliant, intense read!! So thrilling, dark, cruel and, yet, so insanely beautiful.
"The difference between me and him: those who were born with the right to have, and those with the right to want."
Story Hale is a servant in the Crowne household. She's been invisible, going about her work, for years. Then one stolen moment and a shocking secret changes her life, and then she's suddenly making a bargain with the devil.
"There's a need. A possession. Growing inside me like a weed. I didn't like them touching her. I don't like anyone even looking at her."
Grayson Crowne, notorious tabloid playboy, makes a mistake that might cost him his heart's desire. There's no way he's going to let a lowly servant make a fool of him, even if he can't get the taste and feel of her out of his mind. So he's going to make her pay. However, what starts out as an almost win-win-for-him agreement, slowly becomes an obsession. This daring girl spears him with her beauty and her honesty.
"You're starting to take up too much space inside me. I don't think there's any other way to get you out."
God, Grayson Crowne! I hated him, I loved him, he made my heart bleed and my knees weak. His alpha ways and his possessiveness thrilled me. I almost felt sorry for him, caught up between a woman he's always loved and a woman who's wedged under his skin. The final scenes in the book totally broke me.
Story is just such an immensely strong and candid character. Gray and the emotions he evoked in her became her weakness. She soldiered on in the face of cruelty and judgement. My heart broke for her, too!
"The more I touched Story, the deeper she sank. She was ink in the water of my soul, spreading, changing the color and make of me."
I had a massive book hangover after reading this story. One moment I was hopeful and the next I was despairing. I felt wrung out emotionally bouncing back and forth between Gray's coldness and cruelty, and then his heart-melting thoughtfulness and complex vulnerability. Sometimes, it felt like he had no control over himself. He knew what he should and needed to do, but, where Story was concerned, there was an irresistible compulsion to own, possess, and protect her. It was an absolutely thrilling, absorbing read.
Story is a servant, she’s a misunderstood quiet person who really just wants an easy life and to get on with her job. She’s shy and reserved at the best of times but she’s also a character I can relate to. Everything she does is to make her family’s life easier, she would happily take all the pain and misery just so that her family doesn’t have to experience it. She grows in confidence as the book progresses but she’s still very lost and she knows her time is limited with Gray. She knows he is destined for something different and that his future doesn’t involve her.
Gray, he is an enigma, he uses Story as a plaything, just because he can in the beginning. However, as the story advances his feelings for her become entangled. He has to fight for what he knows he ‘should’ do and who he ‘should’ be with against what he really wants and the person he really wants to share his life. To say this book is intense is one way to phrase it. I found myself completely enthralled with this book. There are so many moments of angst and drama in this book, I could not stop reading, I was completely addicted to this story and I refused to stop until I had read every single word. It does end in a way that sets it up for the next book Forbidden Fate. I need it now, May cannot come fast enough!
Stolen Soulmate by Mary Gebhard is the second book in the Crowne Point series. I’m breathless, I’m out of control, I think my brain, my heart, maybe even my tears are stuck in the Crowne Point world. WTAF! I can’t read any other books until I find out what happens next (okay! Sorry! Too far! I take it back). But still that’s what this book does to you, it drives you crazzzyy.
Grayson is an alpha-hole of epic proportions. How can someone with such a big heart be so cruel???? I got whiplash from his 2 faces alone, was he cruel or kind? a bully or a lover? He would push story away only to draw her back in again, all the while crushing her heart at the bottom of his shoe.
Story was so frustrating, she was helpless and she wore her heart on her sleeve. She bent over backwards giving more and more of her heart to Grayson. She was drawn to him like a moth to a flame, all the while getting burnt by the fire. I was screaming at her to stand up to him, show him your better than him, but she continuously shattered her heart with her hopes that he would change.
There’s nothing I dislike more than a helpless heroine BUT! Mary wrote this book sooooo well, I couldn’t help being addicted, hooked, sucked in. She wrote it so beautifully, she tore my heart to pieces. If there’s any book where I want to climb inside and shake the heroine, and maybe a few other characters, this is it!!
Other than that I love Gray I feel he is a misunderstood character (I know what I said above but that's my anger towards his choices) but his alpha personality and his love for his family always seem to win. Even though he has feelings for Story he decides to NOT act on them.
I love Story, I love everything about her except her willingness to do everything the Crownes demand of her.
It does have a Victorian feel to the story, in a way that the character act, speak and arranged marriages that happen inside it thise castle walls.
I need to read the final installment for me to really give a proper review of the story as it spans over more than one book, but overall I give it 4* so far.
