I have seen reviews that this tale was too long, and that the good stuff could have been done in far less space.
I fully disagree.
The tale of the Usurper's reign as the High King needed be told complete. Who did what? How did they do what? This was a human kingdom, so what did the Dwarves, the Lian, the Warrows, even the Foul Folk think?
Strings needed to be followed, and even though the meat of the story took time to arrive, come on!
This is another book in Mithgar! It's been our favorite place since a Pysk sought a falling star. Since Drimmen Deeve was lost and then retaken. since a Silver Call rallied the host, and The Ban took away the ability of Gyphon's folk to walk in the sun. And so many other great legends told to us.

If you love classic high fantasy, minus all the political treachery and murder of other more recent series, then you will love this return to grand adventure on another level. It goes back to the days of good versus evil, stalwart heroes, vile and evil villains, and the mission to displace a usurper from the throne he has stolen. It kind of makes me think this is the kind of novel Alexander Dumas would write if he were a fantasy author. It's a blend of the Count of Monte Cristo combined with the Lord of the Rings. Great stuff!!

Stolen Crown gives you an entire background history lesson in the World of Mithgar. A true gem. You'll learn about all of the territories and a bit of their history as you delve into the story of this Game of Thrones and is truly a must read. You won't be blown away as in previous novels if you're reading them in chronological order as I am but it's definitely not one to skip. Great story, awesome characters and the history lesson is absolutely phenomenal.
What can I say. I would read the phone book if Dennis wrote it. This is not quite up to the Iron Tower or many of his other outstanding books but it is well worth reading. If you have read everything Dennis has written about Mithgar you have frequently noticed mention of the "userper war". It is only a mention in several of his books. Well now you can read the story. Many old friends show up and of course the action is always there. Frankly, I read his books so fast it is dissappointing when I am through. I have read many of his books over five times but I can simply not find anyone to his caliber. You will truly enjoy the read if you love the writing of Mr. McKiernan as much as I do.
