Great Device But No Aussie Content

Great performing device but it’s clearly been rushed to release just like the Amazon Australia website (-that lacks decent filters/categories). No Aussie apps, no ABC iView, no Ten Play, no nothing Australian. Registered for technical call back via Amazon.com.au, Amazon UK called me back, understandably didn’t have a clue about Aussie channels/content, they transferred me to Amazon US who stated that the stick only comes with US channels...I pointed out that the UK Stick had UK App channels like BBC iPlayer, long pause, eventually found an Australian contact number. Rang the number, Australian Kindle Support, eventually advises there’s no Aussie apps at the moment. Again good device but it’s not set up for Oz at the moment.

That all said I’ve been spoilt with Amazon UK over the years. I’ll stay positive, it’s fantastic that Amazon have decided to come to Oz, what you see today will look very different in 12 months time I’m sure of it. Amazon delivery is top notch, their funded TV Series are all very strong and highly rated, the website and offers will change significantly as content increases (-seriously needs some better filtering of product categories!), and in this case well done to Amazon for not screwing the Aussie’s on price. The Fire TV Stick, while classed as Basic Edition, performs really well for current content (-Netflix, and Kodi Krypton was simple to install and runs better than my old Android box), and hopefully ABC, Ten, Freview FV etc get their current Android Apps tweaked and available in the near future.

Update 9 March 18: And for those suggesting that this is the ‘old’ model, well yes it doesn’t come with the voice control but this is the latest 1.3GHz quad-core device, the previous series was 1GHz. After a few months of operation I’m really enjoying this device, great Kodi and Netflix performance, just one star off due to lack of Aussie app support (-recognising that this is more to do with the app providers, hopefully changes as Amazon roll out Prime and more competitive services).

Disappointed with the product - Smart Home Unfriendly

I am really disappointed with this product due to the fact that it is incompatible with Alexa and my Echo devices!

As a regular customer of Amazon services, and home automation enthusiast, I felt amazed when I read in many ebooks available in the Kindle store that with the Amazon Fire Stick TV and my Echo devices I could finally enable the total control of my entertainment system through voice commands - searching/playing different series, movies, channels, and other amazing functions (reason why I bought the Fire Stick device rather than other competitor video streamers).

However, after couple minutes of conversation with the Customer Service, who friendly tried to explain me that I was wrong for expecting this capability, that the Basic Version commercialised in Australia does not support this integration, and being pushed with question technically difficult for an average person to remember in details, like why I believed that I could expect that, where I saw that 'this BASIC version' does include this capability and what version (1s, 2nd, 3rd GEN) was mentioned in the ebooks that I read regarding Alexa/Echo/Fire TV - I got the conclusion that the purchase was a bad decision.

I believe that it would be correct from Amazon to clarify that this device doesn't support this function and also review the content that is available on Kindle store, which makes you believe that with any FIRE TV DEVICE, not mentioning differences in versions such as Basic, 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation you can have the benefits of an integration with Alexa. To conclude, I am really disappointed considering my original expectations about this device.

Perfect for streaming video and music

This is brilliant. For years I have had to stream via an adopter from computer to TV. However, the Fire Stick gives me everything i've always watched and has my netflix, prime video and amazon music unlimited all in all place. There is also countless other apps but I use these three the most. Its so easy and simple.

Good but limited functionality in Australia

What this does it does really well - it's compact and simple to set up, the remote is simple but functional (no voice control), it connects easily to wifi and the interface is intuitive and fast and looks good. Netflix and Prime work really well on it. I knew when I purchased this that it didn't have Australian content and I didn't think I'd mind but after about a week of using it I found it was too limited and I ended up returning it. It didn't have Stan, SBS, ABC iView, 7, 9, 10 or Optus Sport - all of which I realised in the end I was going to want. If you're happy mainly just watching Netflix and Prime then this is very affordable, I was impressed with how easy it was to set up and use and it certainly did everything it claimed to do. Also I guess eventually they'll offer more Aussie content so it would be worth checking if it's been updated. But for my purposes after using it for a while, although it was really nice to use and a good price, the lack of local content meant it didn't really meet my needs.

The Fire TV Stick is so easy to use. If it was "hypothetically" the same price as AppleTV, I still think I'd chose the Fire TV Stick. But considering it's about a quarter of the price, it is a complete no brainer. It is very user-friendly, and I think, young or old, anyone can learn to use this within a few minutes at most.

Paid extra for shipping to receive on a Saturday. It arrived as expected. In purchasing this I though I would give the Fire a go rather than upgrading my Apple TV. I knew that it wouldn't have the Australian TV apps (like stan, ten, view) BUT trying to search for the Apps that I did want was painful - no search function via the TV. In the end I added the apps i wanted via my account on my laptop and only some of the TV apps i wanted don't seem to be available. The hardware is fine and easy to use, the software is okay but was slightly freaked out that it had been pre-programmed with my account details so i didn't need to set up my account. Bit disappointed with the app and search offering. But if you just want it for Netflix or Amazon its fine.

Turn your TV into a Smart TV !!!

This is just what I was looking for! I am in Australia and was looking for a way to not spend thousands buying a new Smart TV but wanted to be able to play Netflix, watch catch up TV and try my new Amazon Prime video subscription. I had a google Chromecast but it wasn't that simple to use as you needed to work it via a smartphone or tablet which is hard when there are a few family members involved!

With the firestick it has a simple remote so anyone in the family can just pick it up and use it.
It works straight out of the box and I was able to set it up really quickly, log into my Netflix account and get watching. All the apps you can use (like 7plus etc.) are there for you to see, if you want to access them you just download the app in one click.

Also of note - I have more data allowance on my phone than my home internet so I have been using it by hotspoting my phone which is awesome! You can set up multiple Wi-Fi connections though so just choose whatever works for you.

I can highly recommend buying this little device for less than $100 (I got it for $59) - has everything you need and more and super easy setup. Really happy and will be buying one for each TV.

A must have for entertainment

Turns any TV into a smart TV!
I had a small older TV that i wanted to watch internet services on, i was thinking of doing a raspberry pi or something. For the money - this cant be beat. Came the next day, seconds to setup & get running.
Image quality is SUPERB... when using this on my Samsung 4k smart TV, the image quality is BETTER watching Prime than the inbuilt software!
Reception is also SUPERB, i use it downstairs where my computer used to be & i had some wiifi reception issues that needed bigger antennas.

perfect product - works incredibly well, easy, cheap.

I bought this back in July and I have found it easy and simple to use. I even bought one for my parents so they could stop trying to use their phones to cast shows and movies to Google Chromecast and they love the simplicity of it as well. It now has everything on it that we Aussies need - especially since they added STAN to the list of apps you can add a couple of months ago! I'd highly recommend this device for a cheaper way of streaming shows than upgrading your tv or buying a tv box!

Loving that I am now watching Prime on my TV

I love how easy this was to setup and how easy it is to use. I can now watch Prime on my TV rather than on my computer. I wasn't sure if I should purchase this as I have chromecast on 2 TV's, but I am really glad that I did. It has a great assortment of apps that you can link to and I like that I don't have to constantly cast from my phone because of the great little remote that it comes with. The only downside was that I couldn't seem to add apps, because it would be great to be able to watch some of the catch-up TV programs such as 9now or 7plus and even Foxtel now through it but that's not to say that these won't be added in the future. Apart from that I can't fault it as I have not had any issues with it and have even recommended it to a couple of people and know that one of them already has plans on purchasing. Took me a few weeks to make my decision but I am loving the direction I have chosen with Amazon, my Echo and my Fire TV stick. :)

Even the most useless person with little to no "geekness" about them can use this. Only issue i find is it regularly WONT let you log out of the app and it just hangs and doesnt close. Eventually the whole app fails and you have to unplug it to reset it. Not a real pain but just typical of the software put out there these days where there are no standards and every TV / Computer / Smartphone / Tablet is trying to do its own thing which leaves peripheral suppliers doing their best and it doesnt always work.

I ordered this on a Monday an it was delivered early Tuesday morning! 10/10 for delivery speed and packaging.

I purchased the fire stick for my mother as a gift to allow her to have the modern technology of a Smart tv with out the price tag.
It took less than 5 minutes to set up and get it running, the simplicity is perfect, easy to use and has all the best movie/tv apps I wanted my mother to have access too ( Netflix, Stan, YouTube, Amazon prime and so on) as well as so many more for her to pick an chose from to personalise her experience.

Currently Ive only used the product for about an hour so I can get the general idea of it before I hand it over to her and I'm impressed with the layout and content- from what I've seen so far I'd say it was money well spent and she will love it.

I will update in the future IF I find any concerns or my opinion changes but at the present I would definitely recommend it. especially for the older generation who don't have a use for gaming consoles or the financing to pay the hefty price for a smart tv.
