All I can say it is I am still alive and well after using it for a week to purify water from rivers and lakes in the alps.
It eats through batteries so if you're going for an extended trek I would advise getting some rechargeable batteries and a method of charging them.
This does not distort the taste anymore then the water already is from a lake/river. This doesn't make crystal clear water as it doesn't add bleach or other chemicals to the mixture. This is a good thing if people can make the mentle hurdler over drinking real water (lake or river)
Just just came from Pakashkag Lake where the water was hued green. We are perfectly fine and still drinking that water on the way home.
We carry a life straw as a battery-less back up but you cannot purify water you might wish to use in food or for tea with the straw!
EDIT: While we still love the steripen, we are dropping 1 star from it. This requires very high quality batteries and is does not suggest this anywhere easily. Upon watching you tube videos after running into trouble, this product is only realiable with high end batteries. We were using regular-nothing-fancy AA's and when they were cold (eg left in a tent over night while camping) this would fail to start up. We needed to take out the batteries and warm them up, and warm the unit up to get about a 50 percent working rate. Very annoying when you rely on this for you water.
I suggest to the company to increase the price and include 4 highly compatible batteries with a suggested list of recommended battery brands to purchase for the reasons I am listing.
It worked great! Somewhat time consuming, but I would sterilize a few litres at a time and keep the extra bottles in the fridge in our rental. It's somewhat heavy, mostly due to the batteries. Plus I made sure to pack it securely in my suitcase, well-cushioned in clothing so it wouldn't break since the bulb is housed inside a glass "tubule"
The UV sterilizer is extremely easy to use and works as described. I think it is a good purchase that I will use for a long time.
Once I worked up the courage to try it and make sure to follow the instructions carefully it worked! (Meaning I drank water from the wild without getting sick).
I don't know if the water I drank might have been safe without the UV treatment, but I believe in the science enough to trust it now.
My intentions are to use it with a nasal rinse. I use it on my already clean water but would also use it for drinking water while traveling.
👍 for me
