The pacing was kind of off, particularly the jump from the opening getting to know you scenes to a year in the future when the heroine is 18 and therefore fair game. It felt like a bit of a cheap trick to get out of the real 'getting to know you' stuff, and it was difficult to connect with how the relationships had developed. It also occasionally left relationships either undeveloped or changed without really letting you feel why.
Because I never really connected with the characters, the plot was difficult for me to get into and in the end I gave up. I actually got 90% of the way through and couldn't be bothered with the last 10%.
This book had all the elements of a story I could have really enjoyed, but the execution didn't grab me at all. There was a lot of 'telling, not showing'. I will keep an eye on the author and have a look again in a few books time in the hopes that the writing style matures into something that really grabs me, because I think there's a lot of potential in the ideas.
