Well, what can I say? The Thieves World run has been excellent overall, but as with all good series it has definitely been showing its age over the last couple of books.
There are some excellent stories in here and I rather like that it ended on a mostly high note. I particularly liked the Beysa co-ruling Sanctuary sending Hakeim (our story-teller who has been with the series from the beginning) off as ambassador to the other Beysib empires to open trade negotiations. Along the way we have some characters gain god-hood (of a sort), Sanctuary being reborn as people flee the Rankan Empire's collapse, and several ongoing storylines are wrapped up in mostly satisfying ways.
Looking more broadly back on the series, I think that the primary issue with it is quite simply that the authors moved away from shorter, straight-forward *fantasy* stories into ridiculously dark themes with overarching Deep Issues. The stories got away from "short and pithy" to "long and weighty", usually to their detriment. Some of the latter stories (in this book and in the last couple) were simply badly *written*....definitely not to my taste anyway...and I found myself unfortunately skipping them to the next. That's a plus in most cases in which there are several stories---if one doesn't "work" for you then you can just skip to the next--but in a dynamic and evolving world such as TW you always felt like you might miss an important plot development buried in the story somewhere. Very much a quandry.
I missed too many of the iconic characters from the first few books....Lythande, Cappen Vera (who hardly ever appeared again), Enas Yorl, Jamie the Red. I know that most of these seemed to be spun off into their own loosely-related series; the couple I've read have very much been "okay".
I dunno. I loved this series when it started; it became darker and less fun as the books went on. This surprised me a bit, and on balance disappointed me. I understand there was a re-launch of sorts a few years back and I will probably buy those eventually to see how Sanctuary has evolved, but it'll be a while.
A great idea for a series, excellent in execution for the bulk of the run. Very recommend to ANY series fan of fantasy.
