Book 3 in the Treading Water Series

In a drunken stupor, Brandon O'Malley frightens his brother Aidan's girlfriend, enraging his brother and the rest of his family. Aidan offers Brandon the choice of rehab or jail, and Brandon reluctantly enters treatment. While in rehab, he confronts the lifetime of secrets and resentments that fueled his spiral into alcoholism, and these revelations have a major effect on his entire family. When he returns home expecting to resume his supervisory role in the family’s construction business, Brandon learns his father has retired and put his younger brothe, Colin,r in charge. Brandon is unhappy to be given the job of renovating an apartment building where he loses his heart to an adorable five-year-old tenant named “Mike.” After he falls hard for Michaela, Brandon becomes involved with her mother Daphne, who is running from a past that will later test his sobriety and his mettle as a man.

"The finale to the Treading Water trilogy was an enchanting lesson in ensuring a low point in your life doesn't define the person you become. It is wonderfully written with characters that envelope you in their world. This book is an excellent ending to a series of books that truly pulled at my heartstrings." —Starting Over, A Reviewer Top Pick, Night Owl Reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brandon will steal your heart..... 23 December 2011

I have to agree with a few of the other ladies that said Starting Over was their Favorite of the Treading Water Trilogy.

I can honestly say that Brandon stole my heart in this book and I think might hold onto it for a while. I tend to be a woman who always went after the man who needed to be "saved". So in Starting Over I found myself feeling so bad for Valerie, Brandon's ex, who put so much of herself into the relationship with a man who was lost. The book starts out with a lot of heavy baggage and as the book goes on, we are able to join Brandon on his road to recovery, shedding the pain and resentment along the way.

I wanted so bad for Brandon to find his HEA, to find someone who would accept him fully, as is, and Daphne was just the person for the job, even tho she tried her hardest to stay away. But when your five year old daughter falls for a man who looks like him...ummm yummy, how can your defenses not be lowered.

Marie Force created an amazing story with Starting Over that gives us hope that no one is ever lost, they just need someone to care enough to find them.
5.0 out of 5 stars Touching Read! 6 September 2016

This was a wonderful addition to this series! I loved really getting to know the rest of the O'Malley family (Aidan's siblings and parents). This book focuses on Brandon, who is working to stay sober after events from Marking Time occur. Shortly after returning from rehab, he meets a little girl named Mike who takes a liking to him. Then he meets her mother.

This book is more than a love story- more than that, I loved watching Brandon in his recovery, making his amends, and truly learning so much. I loved Colin and how he understood that alcoholism is a family disease and that it affected everyone.

The rest of the O'Malleys are what you would expect from a large, Irish Catholic family! I loved them!

Definite reread!

5.0 out of 5 stars Marie Force - she just keeps getting BETTER! 10 January 2012

First off: I'm sad that this is the last of this trilogy! The whole set of three stories is fantastic reading at it's best!

I was so looking forward to this 3rd offering and it blew me away. Marie Force manages to give us greedy readers such an emotional reading experience. She definitely does her homework in each of her books and I've read ALL her books except the 'Fatal' series which I'm saving for a tour de FORCE (pun intended) during a long weekend of reading enjoyment.

Brandon will simply steal your heart. He is flawed. He is a good man. Every new character in this book is so well written and indepth in personality. MIKE....she'll steal your heart, as well.

All the characters in their recurring roles will become beloved. They have to me and I'm so glad to see how they all evolve in this final offering of the Treading Water Trilogy.

I cannot recommend this book more highly and do read the whole trilogy in order. It gets no better than Marie Force offers us. She's a GREAT writer.

I hope she keeps on with writing and look forward to what is next. More trilogys would be very welcome to me and whatever she writes I'll read like a chocoholic in a candy store.

Thank you Marie. This is a book I'll re-read for years to come and the whole trilogy is one I cherish. It's in the top 2 percent of my favorites and I've read thousands of this genre of stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars 75% Well Done, 25% Over the Top :( 3 May 2013

I really enjoyed Marie Forces's novel, Starting Over, through the first 3/4 of the book. I bought into the hook of Brandon's life coming off the rails through alcoholism. I could even buy into the flurry of 4 engagements/weddings in a year for a single family. But the author stretched the bounds of believe-ability by incorporating a wild mystery involving high level politicians, a deranged mother in law and secret rooms in modern castles. This became more of a crime drama with a twist of political scandal. I wish she would have kept it more real, as a human interest story, throughout the book. Again, 4.5 stars for the first 3/4 of the book, 2 stars for the ending.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and heartwarming novel!! 26 August 2015

What a wonderful and heartwarming novel. Brandon's story of his time from rehab through his ongoing recovery as an alcoholic was a moving and engaging story. Marie Force has taken some amazing characters and a very strong story line and truly brought the ups and downs and ins and outs of alcoholism and the recovery of an alcoholic to the forefront of the novel. She did so in such a realistic manner that this novel was very easy to relate to and the characters actions and behaviors were all written so well. (As having had a long term recovering alcoholic in my family, the author truly hit the issues related to alcoholism, recovery, AA, Al-Anon and so many other aspects head on and very accurately.

I loved the way the epilogue was written and how far along in the future it was. Yet, it was perfect for this story. I also really enjoyed how the relationships of the other characters were followed, how the author linked them to the other books while still making this book mainly about Brandon.

Kudos to the author for such a heartwarming and truly moving and accurate novel. A great addition to this series.
