My two gripes with this book is it's written like a copy ad you see on Facebook for online courses. It could have more depth. In this same spirit, the author pushes you to his website ALOT and whilst there are some free resources on his website, the book is clearly building his funnel for people to join an outrageously expensive community ($999 a year!) or other courses.
I'd recommend this book to anyone starting out and for the price it has some really valuable information, but take it all with a pinch of salt and defend yourself against the (very good) sales tactics the author employs. Good to see his methodology in action though!
There are two major mind-shifting insights I got from this book:
First: I’ve always WANTED to be an entrepreneur but now I see how my thinking stopped me from BEING one. This book showed me how to tackle that in a caring but direct manner.
Second: I'm a technician. So I always focused on my business ideas and solutions: The 'mechanism' and all the technical details.
This book got me to focus instead in the customers and getting them to explain their problem AND to explain how they want those to be solved. Then its a matter of hiring out the building of the solution to suitable experts. I stay focused on being an OWNER rather than an employee-like builder.
I have listened to Dane Maxwell's podcasts in which he helps new startups to get clarity on this. I was so impressed, I pre-ordered this book. I read the Kindle version in one sitting and it changed my thinking on how to build my business.
The paperback version is now on the way and I will study that and annotate it with enthusiasm. I am for sure putting this into practice right away.
I have read tons of books on this subject by great and famous experts. But the simplicity and clarity of this book just knocks the others off my book-shelves and takes pride of place.
So yes, I am heartily recommending this book to anyone looking to start their own online business. Not just software, but ANY service or product based business as well.

It is quite remarkable how Dane has managed to breakdown and clarify what seem to be the most daunting business skillsets and distill them into such gloriously readable pages that simply fly by,
… it’s honest, it’s illuminating, he’s humble, he’s badass.
He tells you what you need to know straight, with a caring arm around your shoulder.
The book is crammed with easily actionable and realistic advice for anyone, regardless of capital, confidence, expertise or experience but especially for those lacking ideas or focus (focus being my personal Achilles).
In attempt to address this I have read many entrepreneurial and business centric books that readily offer numerous tactics and strategies, but Dane has made a seismic shift with Start From Zero by also taking time to fully address the mental and emotional side, systematically and empathetically dismantling the obstacles and limiting beliefs that most people have no idea are responsible for holding them back from entrepreneurial success. This is what truly sets Dane and Start From Zero apart.
This is now the third time in three months I have read Start From Zero and my only wish is that I’d found it earlier… much earlier… in fact, right at the start as it has completely changed the way I think about my current (and future) businesses.
Once you have digested Dane’s ‘4 Buildable Brains’ and C.P.S.O. framework, business ideas and a hungry audience start to materialise wherever you place your focus - and I’m talking here about genuine, ethical, sustainable ideas for the betterment of our World,
… but that’s how I found Dane’s approach throughout this book; there’s no greed in here, just a comprehensive, straightforward blueprint to help you achieve and feel exceptionally good about it at the same time.
In fact, Dane is more than willing to offer full transparency of his own businesses, including wins, failures and proof of credibility but, quite refreshingly, he also does not use this book as a vehicle to push his own products, he merely mentions them as an (often free) additional resource for those who may wish to discover them.
So if you’re looking for crystal clear, easily actionable advice delivered in a genuine, honest manner then do not fail to get this book!
And while you’re at it keep it handy, ‘cause you’ll want to refer to Start From Zero over and over again.

Some parts of this are theoretical and will need to be explained with a course.
The challenge with this book is that it doesn't show the the time lines for what do when building your business. For example what are the exact steps to take in 1 month in 3 months and in 6 months.
Dane have to chat with you to improve this product.
