This is a book of poetry in that curious and broad category, 'speculative', which has hints of sci-fi, science, fantasy and much more. In fact a great deal can fit under this category, as the inclusion of some 19th century Australian poems shows.
There are some marvellously entertaining pieces here, some wonderfully imaginative ones, and some that are downright peculiar which I haven't got to grips with at all. Like all books of poetry, a couple of straight readthroughs barely scratches the surface. You have to get to know the poems more individually, and - for me - it's good to memorise them if you want to get to know what they're saying in any depth. I haven't started doing that with any of these yet.
(And then there's one of my own poems which was chosen for inclusion - thanks Tim and P.S!)
