What started out as an interesting take on the outrageously rough up bringing of one of the saga's greatest heroes, ended up as a stirring reminder of how important it is to stand up to evil. Jyn Erso had a terrible life. Her brief moment of happiness led to the presumed death of her one young love and his family. It also led to more death, more betrayal, more lies, more brutality and yet through all of this, and even at book's end, the story's principal character is no closer to happiness, and certainly no closer to acceptance and belief in the force, despite the kyber crystal remaining around her neck throughout the tale.
Characters come and go throughout REBEL RISING, and they are all excellently drawn and beautifully presented to the reader. The writing style, too, is excellent, and despite the fact that the book clearly felt, and read like, a YA novel in the first half, the moment of truth for Jyn, when she began to love, instead of simply living, was also a moment if truth for the book, and it rose to the occasion like a trooper in a bad storm (pun intended).
There is little to no humour in the book (since when is war ever funny?) and there is certainly no happy ending for our Jyn, either. Fans of the movie will love this book, and yet the principal reason for its existence is also the principal object holding it back. The story ended when it had to, since REBEL RISING is nothing more than a prologue to an arguably awesome saga movie. But what if it wasn't? Everybody who picks this book up and reads it deserves a happy ending. The author certainly deserves the chance to write a full and complete independent saga novel. And as the force knows, Jyn Erso deserves a happy ending. But we all know how that turned out, don't we.
Four stars for a book that was held back by its own existence.
I dedicate this book, this review, and the next twenty four hours of my life to the memory of Jyn Erso, the lady, the woman, the young girl who deserved so much more than she ever got.
Jyn Erso: May she be one with the force, and may the force be with her. Always.
