Jedi Trial is all in all, okay. It's not a bad Star Wars book by any means but it is also not great either.
The story follows various characters in an attack of a Separatist taken Communications Center on a planet that has no unique qualities besides the location of the battle.
Here are some pros and cons to help you understand what you're getting into.
This story never moves slow. I finished it in less than a week and you don't really ever feel like the story isn't moving along.
If you're looking for a Star Wars story about a singular battle then this is exactly what you're looking for! The following of this one siege/battle really allows you as a reader to get into the depth of what may have gone on.
Despite the cover depicting Anakin, Ventress and Clone Troopers this book features basically none of that. Anakin is NOT a main character, sidelined for original characters despite supposedly having the book be about his "Jedi Trial" to become a Knight. Anakin doesn't act or feel like Anakin (to be fair I'm reading this post George Lucas's Clone Wars) and Ventress is in less than 5 pages of the book. The characters in the book all have a bias towards clone troopers which felt more like the authors didn't like the idea of a clone army and didn't want to write anything to do with them, which is a real shame if you love clones like I do.
Basically this book advertises itself to be about Anakin which it is NOT and it has basically no Ventress or actual clones, having volunteer humans instead.
New characters are cheesy and one dimensional.
Now I didn't hate this book (TOR Fatal Alliance still holds that spot) but I also didn't particularly enjoy any aspect of it. This is a Legends novel you can skip and you won't miss much. If you're a completionist then go right ahead but expect more of an original characters story and less an Anakin story.
All in all I give it 3/5 because it's not bad, just not good and the lack of any consequential and realistic changes to Anakin's character ultimately hurts this book.
