This hardcover collects the John Byrne Star Trek trades "Assignment Earth", "Romulans", "Crew", and "Leonard McCoy: Frontier Doctor". Although Amazon says the page count is 320, there are actually 480 pages in this massive book.
First off, if you're just a fan of Star Trek: TNG or are looking to read some comics featuring more adventures with Kirk and Spock...you might NOT like this. Just a fair warning. Kirk and Spock aren't really in these stories, in fact if you're a casual fan you might not know ANYONE in these stories, except Dr. McCoy, who is only in the last 80 pages or so.
HOWEVER, if you really love Star Trek:TOS episodes and are a fan of John Byrnes art and storytelling, this is a fantastic collection. It dives into side characters that are barely explored in the TV shows and enriches the overall star trek universe.
"Assignment Earth" features special agent Gary Seven from the TOS episode Assignment:Earth. He travels through space and time with his assistant, fixing problems in the time line. This definitely would have made a wonderful spin off series in the 60's.
"Romulans" is crazy political thriller storyline in the star trek universe dealing with political leadership, cloaking technology, and the neutral zone. Klingons, Romulans, and the federation are all on the brink of war, forming shifty alliances with hidden agendas. People who know their Star Trek will be overjoyed to see the Klingons Kor and Koloth in starring roles!
"Crew" is probably my favorite of the story arcs. It features Christopher Pike's unnamed 1st lieutenant from the pilot episode of Star Trek, before she ever serves upon the enterprise. Again...if you only know about Christopher Pike from the new JJ Abrams films...turn back now! I'm telling you these are NOT the best stories for a casual Star Trek fan. The only exception would be if you're a big comic/sci fi fan who loves John Byrne. Then you might still enjoy these.
"Leonard McCoy:Frontier Doctor" of course deals with everyone's favorite doctor from Star Trek (sorry Robert Picardo, you're a close second!) These are highly entertaining comics that team up McCoy with an Andorian (the blue aliens) named Theela and even features Scotty! I believe these stories are supposed to take place right before Star Trek: The Motion Picture. This is evident because of McCoy's awesome beard.
I won't ruin it for you, but I will say over the course of 480 pages John Byrne does throw in parts that create an overall story arc across the 4 stories, letting you know how they all fit together in the timeline.
You can buy the 4 trades separate but I believe with Amazon's discount this hardcover collection is a better deal and it's always nice to have all the issues in one place. I was very bummed that there is NO foreward or commentary of any kind in this collection. You just get the issues, and a cover gallery for each arc. No preliminary sketches, no introduction by the author, nothing extra at all really.
If you want more detail about the content, look up the customer reviews for each of the trades. I just couldn't believe the only other reviewer for this hardcover collection basically wrote "I only read the first story so far...it was pretty good...3 stars". Seriously? I can only hope he was planning to update once he finished the book. But for now, I hope this review helped you decide if this was a comic worth checking out.
