Product Description

I’m scarred. Broken. I’ll never be the same.
But I will take this journey.

Ever since my last dive ended in bloodshed, I’ve been terrified to go back into the water. But the opportunity to spend a semester at sea is too good to pass up. I need to get my life back.

I never expected to love it this much. And I never expected Tristan MacDougall.

Rugged, strong, and with demons of his own, Tristan helps me find the courage I thought I had lost and heals me with every stolen moment we share. But the rules of the ship mean we can't be together.

When a dive excursion goes terribly wrong, our only hope for survival is each other.

After a traumatic incident Ari has become afraid of the sea, which is inconvenient because she's been approved for her dream program, a semester at sea. It used to be her ultimate goal to spend ten weeks studying the water and animals, learning to navigate a boat and witnessing the abundance of beauty nature has to offer. Now she's scared instead, but she's determined to make the best of it and maybe she'll be able to conquer her fears and rediscover her love for the sea.

Being on a ship comes with strict instructions. Ari has to stick to one rule in particular, she can't fraternize with the crew. That's going to be really difficult because when Ari meets Tristan she knows she likes him a lot more than she's supposed to. Will they be able to keep their relationship purely platonic? Ari recognizes a certain type of grief in Tristan. What has he been through and will they be able to help each other to get through the worst of their sadness? Will Ari's semester at sea be a success or a disaster?

Ari is a strong and fierce person. She's willing to go far to reach her goals and I loved that about her. She's also sweet and helpful and she's smart in many different ways. Her impulsive nature sometimes gets her in trouble, but she always follows her heart and I liked that very much about her personality. Tristan is her soul mate, it's clear from the start that they have chemistry, understanding on a deep level and plenty of love. Because they aren't supposed to be together their love has a forbidden element, which made it extra interesting to read about. I immediately liked their easy conversations, their ability to heal each other's deepest psychological wounds and their amazing sparks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite homerun! This book had everything I could have wanted! 9 June 2017

A definite homerun! This book had everything I could have wanted!

The growth for basically every character was wonderful, not least of all Ari and Tristan. The slow burn (my favorite type of Romance) was a sizzle to an inferno, engulfing me in the best way. The deepening of their relationship was perfectly done, slowly unveiling the sadnesses they both hid just under the surface endearing them to me.

The friendships that developed with Kevin and Jenny were a great addition, and I really enjoyed the bit of surprise with these two by the end. They weren't who I had pegged them to be in the beginning.

This had some really great suspense and tense scenes, involving so much of what you might expect to encounter while on a schooner at sea. Animals, other humans, roiling waves, and a storm or two all created a riveting drama.

I will say that I don't know much (okay, anything) about sailing,  but definitely feel like I was there on the adventure with Ari, learning about it all. The descriptions are so vivid and the setting just so incredibly immersive!

It has to be noted that Miller did a nice job of Scottish accents here too. I had no problem hearing the Scot in Tristan or the Captain, which was really just a treat. :)
4.0 out of 5 stars An emotional journey. 1 June 2017

I loved the unique setting for this novel. The title alone reminded me of a line from a poem I first read nearly forty years ago...it was a wonderful surprise to find that the very same poem is referenced in this wonderful story.

The author keeps you engaged within the narrative as the undeniable chemistry between the protagonists unfolds. Ari and Tristan's journey is full of emotion. It's tragic, yet heart-warming as the pair overcome personal issues whilst trying to ignore their feelings for one another because students and crew can't fraternise. But rules can be broken?

This is my first book by this author and I hope to read more from her in the future.
5.0 out of 5 stars The stars align for this book 2 April 2017

This was the book I was needing right now. I've been reading a lot of YA dystopian or fantasy stories, which are often part of a trilogy, and they are great, but I really have been craving solid, developed, flawed, REAL characters where all of the action happens in just one book. This was exactly that book. The plot was appropriately suspenseful: what happened to Ari's leg? Why is Tristan so sad at times? Will Ari make it through a dive? What will happen if Tristan and Ari are caught? I felt myself desperately wanting to know what was going to happen next but also wanting to savor each page. The descriptions of the sea, sunsets, ports of call, developing friendships, and ship activities were detailed and delicious. The slow creciendo of Ari and Tristan's relationship culminates in a very satisfying and steamy union. By the end of the book, I felt like kicking myself for never having spent a semester at sea! I highly recommend this book and I am greatly looking forward to more from this author!
5.0 out of 5 stars Adrenaline, adventure, and romance during a semester-at-sea on a tall ship 16 June 2017
By Megan - Published on Amazon.com

I’ve been looking forward to reading A Star to Steer her since the minute the cover and book jacket description were released. This book has all the elements of “book crack” for me: forbidden love, unique settings and micro-cultures, and heart-melting new-adult romance.

The one-of-a-kind setting and micro-culture here is a semester at sea program on tall ship in the Caribbean where the characters frequently go scuba diving. This particular setting was double-strong “book crack” for me because I would have loved to do a semester at sea in college but didn’t have the chance, and through reading, I feel as if I’ve gotten a taste for the experience that I didn’t have. I DID get my fair share of time at sea as an officer in the Navy for the five years, so I can absolutely vouch for Beth Anne’s nautical accuracy and I really enjoyed comparing and contrasting the workings of a cutting edge warship with a historical tall ship operating in the modern day.

As far as characters, I was a gonner for the male lead, Tristan. A sexy, sensitive, Scottish, fiddle-playing, professional sailor…what’s not to love? The main character, Ari, was intriguing and relatable as she battled through the repercussions of an accident that left her with a paralyzing physical fear threatening to undercut her entire future career plan.

This book is an excellent choice for readers who like a healthy dose of adrenaline and adventure with their romance, and to be completely immersed in an accurate and unique setting.

Miller's knowledge of the sea, tall ships, her personal experience diving and sailing enhances and elevates this New Adult story of self discovery and romance.
The author adeptly conveys the day to day reality of life onboard a ship where the amenities are to be found in the sights of the sea and the budding love affair between her protagonists Ari and Tristan.
Ari's voyage is not just on the ocean, but within herself. She triumphs by conquering her fears and opening her heart to love.
Buy "A Star to Steer Her By" and take a romantic, moving journey with Ari and Tristan.
