Cool concept but complicated

I liked the idea of cosmic and magical energies working together. I did, however, find it a little hard to follow along when Alina starts talking about all the astrology aspects. Probably because I know little about astrology personally. I could have enjoyed this more if it had gone a little slower and Alina had explained it all in simple terms to Roland as if he was as uninformed as me. Also the breakdown she has...why did it happen? Did I missed the explanation somewhere? As interesting as I find the story concept, I'm not sure if I will read the next book given I will probably spend a considerable portion feeling confused over my lack of understanding of astrology and missing the points being made.

This is the prequel to the Starseed series and the main character is Alina, who is on her way to a human only party when she gets knocked over by a drunken man and is saved from hitting the ground by his extremely good looking friend Roland. Ben is so drunk, he ends up falling asleep half into the road! Alina can tell that Roland has magic and lots of it, something she has always been able to sense and not something that was altered after the war where supernaturals came out of the closet. Many received magical powers after the massive wave of magic used to stop the war, but she wasn’t one of them. She can sense supernaturals and magic users, but is far too busy most of the time with her studies and part time job. When she meets Roland, she feels a massive pull towards him and is left almost speechless. He offers to accompany her to her party and walks her there, but doesn’t go in as he is clearly not human. But he also believes that she isn’t either! That is a total shock to her and she doesn’t really believe him, but they agree to swap numbers and get together at some time later. They talk about what he is and what she would really love to be and she mentions her love of astrology, something she has been able to sense and read about anyone.
The possibility that her ability to understand astrology and the cosmic energies around people, means she is actually a paranormal being herself rather than human, is more than her mind can even handle. Her best friend Val has to take her back to Roland’s the next day, where Val is pulled to Ben, for the two of the young men to make her understand what her new reality actually is. It hasn’t been much fun being human when so many others have such interesting powers and magic and she can sense it all around her. Her connection with Roland is out of this world and when they had their first distant experience together, she was blasted by his magic and his very soul. They have a connection that was written in the stars and he persuades her to use her cosmic powers for others in the magical world and to ignore the haters, of which there will always be, and to become what she can and what she really desires. They are stronger together and he accepts her for everything she is and will help her with this new realisation of her own powers. I can’t wait to see how that works out in the next book of the series. A great pairing of characters with a wonderful soulful connection and an unusual twist on a magical power.
