Product Description

B. J. Tiernan’s novel is a deep dive into the business of living and dying. Recluse Lance Stavros is a successful doctor who runs his own practice, but on the inside, he’s basically high-functioning human wreckage. He was born into a loveless home that lacked the nurturing to help him develop an ability to cope with life’s challenges. Now Lance is forty-seven, and the only reason he’s survived the past four decades without taking his own life is cowardice.

As hopelessness overcomes him, and he’s finally finding the guts within to pull the trigger on his existence, a house call pulls him out of the deadly spiral. It will turn out to be the call of his lifetime.

Lance becomes a live-in medic for a controversial mystic and lecturer who irks the Greek government—and becomes an assassin’s target. Amid this new and curious world, and a reignited past romance, Lance battles his cowardice to investigate who is trying to kill his employer, and he’s about to uncover more than he bargained for.

Those who live with, or have experienced, emotional pain, destructive tendencies, or addictions will find Lance’s story familiar, engaging, and at its heart—inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting!! 16 June 2014

I read Standing on a Whale in two long sessions over a weekend. I couldn't put it down. The author's work flowed beautifully and intriguingly making you want to go deeper with each sentence.

The old saying that people come into our lives for a reason or a season is particularly meaningful in B J Tiernan's novel. The person who comes into Lance Starvos' life comes for both and in three short months Lance's life goes from the end to a new beginning. The transformation, which occurs as a result of a single phone call, is restorative and earth-shattering for this depressed, suicidal and friendless doctor.

Author Tiernan, a teacher by profession, weaves a powerful story line while sharing some profound spiritual truths focused on looking within ourselves to find the answers to the age-old philosophical questions of our lives. It is written is short, suggestive teaching, neither pushy or oppressive. Set in Greece, the story is refreshing, delightful, meaningful and educational in the genre of many of the new paradigm thinkers.

It is a book of awareness, forgiveness, healing, understanding and recognition of meaningful coincidences in our lives. I recommend it to anyone who has ever been hurt, depressed, victimized, oppressed or lost. Hey, at some stage of life, that 's all of us!

I recommend it to all!

5.0 out of 5 stars A page turner with a twist 13 August 2015

Lance Stavros is a doctor, who is an emotionally unavailable loner, with a death wish. He refuses to delve into the "skeletons in the closet" that keep him from living a fulfilled life. His solution is to end it all by committing suicide, yet he lacks the guts to do it. On his 47th birthday, he finally has it all planned out, but fate interferes, as a phone call summons him to make a house call to a mystic named Hadden. Hadden is an empathic, spiritually charged individual who lectures on the philosophies of life. He is perceived as a threat by city officials, who will stop at nothing to see him dead. Lance is pulled into a web of intrigue and murder, yet he is determined to protect Hadden's life, even while risking his own.

Hadden becomes a mentor and father figure to Lance. He enlightens Lance by leading him to face his inner fears and demons, as well as find his inner peace and sanctuary. We clearly see Lance's transformation as he discovers the true meaning of friendship, caring, and love. Hadden is instrumental in Lance's new outlook on life and his purpose in it.

Standing On A Whale is a true gem. B.J. Tiernan combines the elements of mystery, suspense, romance and psychological thriller into an unforgettable story. Her writing style is descriptive, engaging and intense. She brings the characters to life and moves the story, effortlessly, from chapter to chapter. B.J. not only gives you an enjoyable read, but she weaves in some life points along the way. These may lead to your own journey of self-discovery and transformation. I highly recommend this book.

Some of my favorite quotes from Standing On A Whale:
1. "You must choose your own path and craft your own course."
2. "Love is such a misunderstood idea-only a handful can grasp it."
3. "Transformation is unbecoming who you've been up to now."
4. "It is impossible to open up to new ideas while holding on tightly to old ones."
5. "Life is a mystery, a splendid, wondrous dance."
6. "Only my books are important."
7. "Ultimately you must surrender to life."

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awe-inspiring Read ! 26 May 2015

Dr. Lance Stavros. Respected physician living in Patra, Greece. You would think he has it all. But you would be wrong. This man wants to take his own life and almost does when a mysterious and cerebral individual named Hadden enters his consciousness. Hadden has a unique and timeless view of the world which the movers and shakers of Patra look upon as a threat. As Hadden’s unique and ethereal ways slowly take seed in Lance and the establishment ratchet up the pressure…I could tell you more but it should remain a mystery until you read Bev Tiernan’s fabulous book for yourself. And you might just find yourself standing on a whale catching minnows as I was while reading this book. Thanks for taking me on a wonderful and inspirational journey, Bev Tiernan. This one is not to be missed. Sensational!

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful and INTENSE! 21 June 2014

A powerful tale of how a de-sensitized, shell-of-a-man takes a spiritual journey that not only changes the course of his life, but the very core of his being. I lost myself completely in the Greek countryside, and felt like the characters were my friends. B.J. Tiernan has such a flair for description, that I could almost taste the wine!

This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I highly recommend it. Be prepared to search your own soul as your mind twists and turns with this remarkable story.
5.0 out of 5 stars I loved, loved this book 15 March 2016

I loved, loved, loved this book. The philosophy attracted me more than the romantic, or murder mystery aspects. Reading it, I came accross a passage that I believe is very fitting for the times we are living in.
" Some of you are finding this world to be an ugly place. You must be contributing ugliness to it. Only individuals can make this world unlovely. Just look around you. This world is a lovely place. The prejudice, bias, greed, anger, hatred, ambition, jealousy, resentment, and judgment you keep bumping into are not part of this world. Make no mistake. Those qualities are coming from you. Please do not blame this beautiful world for what you are."

This resonated with me, due to the political turmoil we find ourselves in, and having a small baby at home. I see such a beautiful and lovely world, that I'm scared by those for spewing these ugly traits.

I highly recommend this book to anyone. We read it in our book club and everyone loved it.
