Product Description

B. J. Tiernan’s novel is a deep dive into the business of living and dying. Recluse Lance Stavros is a successful doctor who runs his own practice, but on the inside, he’s basically high-functioning human wreckage. He was born into a loveless home that lacked the nurturing to help him develop an ability to cope with life’s challenges. Now Lance is forty-seven, and the only reason he’s survived the past four decades without taking his own life is cowardice.

As hopelessness overcomes him, and he’s finally finding the guts within to pull the trigger on his existence, a house call pulls him out of the deadly spiral. It will turn out to be the call of his lifetime.

Lance becomes a live-in medic for a controversial mystic and lecturer who irks the Greek government—and becomes an assassin’s target. Amid this new and curious world, and a reignited past romance, Lance battles his cowardice to investigate who is trying to kill his employer, and he’s about to uncover more than he bargained for.

Those who live with, or have experienced, emotional pain, destructive tendencies, or addictions will find Lance’s story familiar, engaging, and at its heart—inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting!! 16 June 2014

I read Standing on a Whale in two long sessions over a weekend. I couldn't put it down. The author's work flowed beautifully and intriguingly making you want to go deeper with each sentence.

The old saying that people come into our lives for a reason or a season is particularly meaningful in B J Tiernan's novel. The person who comes into Lance Starvos' life comes for both and in three short months Lance's life goes from the end to a new beginning. The transformation, which occurs as a result of a single phone call, is restorative and earth-shattering for this depressed, suicidal and friendless doctor.

Author Tiernan, a teacher by profession, weaves a powerful story line while sharing some profound spiritual truths focused on looking within ourselves to find the answers to the age-old philosophical questions of our lives. It is written is short, suggestive teaching, neither pushy or oppressive. Set in Greece, the story is refreshing, delightful, meaningful and educational in the genre of many of the new paradigm thinkers.

It is a book of awareness, forgiveness, healing, understanding and recognition of meaningful coincidences in our lives. I recommend it to anyone who has ever been hurt, depressed, victimized, oppressed or lost. Hey, at some stage of life, that 's all of us!

I recommend it to all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful and INTENSE! 21 June 2014

A powerful tale of how a de-sensitized, shell-of-a-man takes a spiritual journey that not only changes the course of his life, but the very core of his being. I lost myself completely in the Greek countryside, and felt like the characters were my friends. B.J. Tiernan has such a flair for description, that I could almost taste the wine!

This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I highly recommend it. Be prepared to search your own soul as your mind twists and turns with this remarkable story.

4.0 out of 5 stars An intelligent mix ; philosophy and thriller 13 September 2015
By Jean Gill - Published on
I was completely hooked by the superb opening chapter - as good as anything I've ever read. I didn’t read it; I lived the experience of that small boy, trapped in a pipe and in his peer group. I felt for him and was rooting for him in Chapter 2, where Dr Lance Stavos is now a 47 year-old ‘failure’ about to commit suicide. Then the magus, Hadden, comes into his life. The story takes place on a Greek island and the setting adds to the theme of enlightenment.

Hadden’s lectures express a philosophy which makes complete sense to me overall, and express it well. I enjoyed them, as would readers who are interested in the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of living a full life – and coming back from the despair that leads to suicide.

I found it more difficult to believe in the thriller aspect of the story, with plots and paranoia. Yet the evidence is in the daily news, that openly expressing views against religions and governments does indeed lead to persecution and sometimes death. I was reminded that there are dangers in expressing such views, especially to large groups of people, ‘disciples’ in effect.

The untangling of Dr Stavos’ personal hang-ups, both past and present, reveals insights into human nature that are convincing. I felt that B.J. Tiernan really understood the psyche of her main character, his avoidance of commitment to a woman, his passionate attachment to the guru and above all his desire to change. That is what makes the story interesting to me. How he changes.

The writing is sometimes beautiful, as in the title metaphor, which completed in the book. When there is some mystery, as in the phrase ‘Standing on a Whale’, there is room for me to wonder about the meaning of life. I didn’t like was the moments of melodrama and over-writing, where I was told in exaggerated detail what all the characters felt and what the scene meant, so I felt nothing at all – such a contrast to that opening scene.

I would definitely read more by this author and I think this would be an outstanding book, with some more ruthless editing.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awe-inspiring Read ! 26 May 2015

Dr. Lance Stavros. Respected physician living in Patra, Greece. You would think he has it all. But you would be wrong. This man wants to take his own life and almost does when a mysterious and cerebral individual named Hadden enters his consciousness. Hadden has a unique and timeless view of the world which the movers and shakers of Patra look upon as a threat. As Hadden’s unique and ethereal ways slowly take seed in Lance and the establishment ratchet up the pressure…I could tell you more but it should remain a mystery until you read Bev Tiernan’s fabulous book for yourself. And you might just find yourself standing on a whale catching minnows as I was while reading this book. Thanks for taking me on a wonderful and inspirational journey, Bev Tiernan. This one is not to be missed. Sensational!
