Oh dear, sorry to say I was not at all impressed with this novel. To be fair, I had only read one previous novel by this author, 'The Essense of the Thing' which I found absolutely stunning. In that, the emotional journey through rejection and loss and complete life displacement was exquisitely described and experienced.
Stairway to Paradise. Well, just no comparison. I wouldn't have thought it by the same author. Issues of desire, moral dilemmas in failing marriage, cultural displacement, are raised but unfortunately I couldn't find one distinguishable character amongst the cast and they ALL spoke just like Joyce Grenfell! Including the children!
I too read this book in one sitting. But that was due to the simplistic writing, superficiality, lack of characterisation and I just didn't care what happened to them.
