Adam Brookes is the new Le Carré - without question this is the best modern spy novel I have ever read - and I thought NIGHT HERON, his debut, had that spot. In many ways, it maintains it because the two run seamlessly together, taking the primary characters and moving them on in ways that feel utterly authentic. That's one of the strengths of this book: the characterisation is concise, but real, Philip Mangan, Trish Patterson, Rocky Shi, Peanut… they are all build strand by strand into complex, vulnerable people. The settings, too, are entirely authentic, and the plot… so many modern writers rely on acronyms and weapon stats to create authenticity, when what Brookes does is to create a sense of having explored this world to its self-serving, duplicitous depths. The action is genuinely thrilling and the premise horribly plausible. Read this. It's perfect.

Great follow up to Night Heron

Brookes follows up Night Heton with another belter. This not an all action, pile up the bodies thriller (thankfully). This is much more nuanced.

Set somewhat unusually in Ethiopia, Mangan is back to freelancing as a journalist but still feeling the pull of his recent exposure to the world of espionage. But an approach begins to reveal something of the Chinese involvement in Africa and the factions and tension behind it. Drawn ever further in, Mangan is back in the pay of VX.

What I like about this series so far is its authenticity and contemporary feel. This is pretty much what being an agent and running an agent must be like. Can't think of any other writer who captures that so well.

There's a twist at the end that suggests the setting for the third instalment. But I hope this series runs and runs.

After a whiz but no bang beginning it is a slow start as there are many strands to elucidate but they all come together in a very whiz-bang ending with a little twist at the end. Better than the first as a thriller but not as claustrophobic though it couldn’t be as we go from Washington to Hong Kong to Addis Ababa to Thailand to Myanmar interspersed with episodes in London and Oxford. An initial plot to run an agent in China which goes to hell in a handcart. Roll on the third episode.

If you like John Le Carre then you'll like this, but I suggest you first read Adam Brookes's début novel, Night Heron,to familiarise yourself with the back-stories of the main characters.
