Product Description

"I love an underdog story. I love a heroine who can rise above all the adversity she has faced with dignity and elegance. I love a second change love story – for me – this book was tick, tick, ticking all my boxes. The one thing I didn’t count on, was how much of an emotional read it was going to be. I laughed, I cried and I loved this book." Karen's Book Haven

Hazel

I’ve spent my younger years acting, safe in a world of make-believe. I learnt to transform into roles to hold onto a sense of harmony in my life.
Years later, still in that moment, I am another face. Another mask. I am not me—the forgotten daughter, the quiet friend, the unrequited love.
Until the pretending becomes meaningless.
And my life hardens again.
I’m tired of acting for my friends when my parents ignore me. I’m tired of acting for myself when I want the world to stop being so hard. I’m tired of holding back from the only man I’ve ever loved.
Even though being drawn to him petrifies me above all else.
When I act to him, he sees right through me.
Each and every time.

Robbie

She has haunted my dreams for years. The girl I teased to watch her blush. The girl I watched in quiet agony. The girl I had a chance with, one I ruined when I pushed her away.
Now, after all these years, she’s returning to work for me. A ruse to make her mine.
I will show her that she deserves to be cherished, and loved. I’ll bring back that goddess who took my breath away when I was twenty.
You only live once. Side by side, I only want this final lifetime spent with her.

Splinters is the second novel in the Running On Empty series and can be read as a standalone. It contains no cliff hanger.

Wow! M.R Field has done it again! The second in the series saw the story of Hazel and Robbie, whilst giving us the rest of the gang too!
A little more edgy, sexy, angsty, humour, love and forgiveness! You will love this book if you love the above whilst also having a fantastic story line and great description and connectiveness to the characters and places!
I love that it is Australian based whilst not going over the top in slang and Aussieisms!
The story line kept me thinking of what was coming next... No cliches, or predictability! Romantic and sad too!

It's the gamut of emotions that you feel when reading it that you know you are invested in the story and the way it leaves you warm and fuzzy with a smile on your face when you have finished it... THAT is when you know you have read a great book!!
THIS was a great book!! Looking forward to the next in the series!!
Well done M.R. Field! So proud to be a fellow Aussie and now a big fan of your work!!

I started this book with the same trepidation. Fragments, is such a beautiful story and I thought ‘pfft – no way can the author get the lightning to strike twice’. Even in series that I have LOVED, there’s always that one book that doesn’t quite live up to the (sometimes unfair) expectation.
Well, hand me a spoon because I’m able to have a big ol’ bowl of humble pie. I was afforded the rare and beautiful opportunity of being a beta reader for this book – now let me say this right here for the record – that as not shaped my opinion in any way shape or form. Field approached me with the opportunity and I kept saying ‘are you sure?’
Now, to the review - I love an underdog story. I love a heroine who can rise above all the adversity she has faced with dignity and elegance. I love a second change love story – for me – this book was tick, tick, ticking all my boxes. The one thing I didn’t count on, was how much of an emotional read it was going to be. I laughed, I cried and I loved this book.
Hazel seems to have it all. Wealthy family, great friends and fantastic talents in both the singing and dancing arenas. Hazel is living a lie. She’s very adept at putting a mask on to hide what’s really going on. I enjoyed how her story is not a conventional one. She might not have any physical scars from being a human punching bag but the emotional ones cut deep and have been long lasting. The author has delved deeply into the silent side of domestic abuse, written it eloquently but also so vividly. I related too personally to many sections of Hazel’s story and it’s heartbreaking. How people can be so cruel is still beyond me. I love how she has the attitude of ‘this happened to me but I’m not letting this define me.
