5.0 out of 5 stars A committed environmentalist's searingly honest account of a relationship and pregnancy under extreme conditions . 13 January 2015

Spinifex Baby is the fascinating account of a couple who take on the task of managing, for two years, a remote partly desert property for an Australian environmental organisation. It is a searingly honest account of a relationship tested under extreme conditions of isolation and hardship. As well as describing the efforts to combat the environmental damage happening in their area, the book explores the personal emotional, physical and psychological changes which can occur through a pregnancy and parenthood. Written with great sensitivity and skill this would be a very worthwhile read for couples facing parenthood for the first time. It would also be an excellent and thought provoking book for book group discussion. Karen Harrland is to be congratulated on a book which is not only compulsive reading but also shines a light on one of the most basic human experiences: parenthood. It will be enjoyed by readers who are interested in environmental issues as well as the human condition.

A brilliantly written, courageous and brutally honest insight into the harsh realities of life and love in the Australian desert combined with an exploration of the emotional, rarely discussed challenges of early motherhood. A rich sense of gratitude and fulfillment in the simple things in life shine through in this memoir which will leave the reader feeling uplifted. Loved it!
