AFTER READING THE FIRST TWO NOVELS, I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A 3RD BOOK FOLLOWING THE STORYLINE OF THE MCKENZIE FAMILY, THIS STORY TAKES PLACE DURING WORLD WAR I, GRAPHIC SCENES OF MEN IN THEIR YOUNG LIVES, AND OF THE FAMILY'S LEFT BEHIND. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL AVID READERS.

So well written that you became one of the family, watching over Tilly as she struggled with losing her brothers and cousin to fight a war and with those same men facing the hardship that the war in the trenches supplied them with everyday.

Great read! The scope of this story is breathtaking, from a vast Australian cattle station that Tilly is left to manage after all the men go to war, to France during tragic WWI. I came to care about the characters and feared for them, especially Tilly who was tough and smart, while the story held me in its grip.

I loved this book I cried in places and was deeply moved by Olivers caring for his fellow soldiers. Lukes love for Matilda was moving. Annemarie Brear is a great story teller, I have read nearlly all of her books.

Found this book interesting. A lovely story without any grotesque content. Seemed to be an accurate description of war. Loved it.

I have found another author to follow. Read both books and didn’t want to stop reading either till the end.

Good story of Australian settlers who struggled on, when their young men joined the 1st world war. Good descriptions of environment and fighting on the front lines, describing the men's feelings and endeavours to keep their friends safe.

What a fabulous book. I only downloaded this yesterday and read it into the early hours. Just couldn't put it down.
The whole book encapsulates the amazing atmosphere of WW1, the depictions of the battle and of the men at war. And then in contrast it tells the story of those who were left at home to worry and continue with their lives, while never knowing if their loved ones were ever coming home.

I've loved reading this trilogy from beginning to end, and in southern sons AnneMarie Brear really brings the reality of world war 1 to life, with the harshness but also the loyalties to each other, and made it so easy to read and feel, she's a talented author.
