This book was disappointing. A messy rambling plot and the protagonist being more obtuse than usual made me hurry to the final page.

Great addition to the series!

The characters of Simon have left me cold. As has his father. Like father like son. He's such a selfish man when it comes to women. Won't be reading any more in the series.

Excellent

It seemed a long wait for my hard copy of this, the latest in the series to arrive, but it was worth it. Simon is sent on a covert operation, investigating those involved in some extremely unpleasant crimes and so is off the radar for his family and friends at a time when he might have been of use. His sister, Cat, who is coming slowly to terms with the loss of her husband and raising three children on her own, is not helped by having financial worries and the changes in the local Hospice system which have affected her work load and its nature. Step-mother Judith is having a difficult time with Simon's father, Richard. The honeymoon is over and he seems to be reverting to his past difficult ways, and has behaved in an unforgiveable manner. Simon's lover, Rachel, is now a free agent and has moved into his flat but is Simon any easier than his father to live with? Can she learn how to cope with him and his occasional long absences? Not a usual policier, the book deals with some very relevant issues against the background of the Serrailler family life. I thoroughly enjoyed the story but now presumably, will have quite a wait until the next instalment. Ah well!

This latest Simon Serrailer is definitely back on track. Susan Hill certainly hasn't just done a predictable follow up to the last one either; in many ways this is the most challenging novel in the series to date. Suffice to say that Simon has to go deep undercover in this, into a world no-one would feel comfortable in... Interestingly, it makes you realise how "undercover" he usually is, at home, in relationships, with his family, etc. He never really feels comfortable in any ordinary situation, and indeed his only really comfortable role in life is that of the police officer. Which sounds dull, and like so many other crime novels - but trust me, it isn't. This is a hard novel to put down, you'll feel totally gripped by it, maybe even moved. Easily Susan Hill's best yet, in my view.

Difficult subject
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 July 2019Verified Purchase
Susan Hill has written about a difficult subject in Soul of Discretion which willing be everyone's cup of tea. Simon Serrailler might be an exceptional police officer but whose personal life seems to be about maintaining a detachment from commitment which might threaten his comfort level outside of work. The main story line is about child abuse but also about the dramas of the the individual members of the Serrailler family. A good read but not for the squeamish.

Not the best in the series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 November 2018Verified Purchase
I was a little disappointed with this book. I felt at times it was going through the motions of story telling. Characterisations also seemed lacklustre and at times superficial. I didn’t engage with Simon on an emotional level especially as there was a lot of walking in bad weather - perhaps I missed the metaphor! I did read it and I did enjoy it and I will read any future books in the series. Before that I have to go back to read book 7, which I seem to have forgotten who did what and to whom! Not my most favourite Serrailler novel.

Dark. Very dark.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2016Verified Purchase
Susan Hill is very unafraid of analysing issues which have generally been taboo and this novel revolves around some of the most sensitive: death, Paedophile rings, sexual assault. She binds it into a tight plot during which she exposes not only the issues themselves but also seeks to destroy the taboos which keep them under the carpet for most people. The reader feels the angst of Cat as she grapples with family members in deep trouble, reputations and relationships threatened. Her character is made wholesome by Hill's skill in the use of language and evoking atmosphere. This is by no means an enjoyable read. In parts it is terrifying. But it absorbs totally. We should not be afraid of the dark side or of discussing it in the hope of finding some resolution and Susan Hill can help us do that.
