Product Description

Can young love stand against the cruelest of fates?

Darien River is the gorgeous and charming lead guitar player for These Bones, a local goth rock band.

Faith Cromley is a shy introvert to the extreme. She works at Dave's Music Shop and does her best to avoid the intimidating clientele. Hiding away in her relatively quiet classical instrument department suits her just fine.

In a twist of fate, these two contrasting personalities come together. Their mutual attraction is undeniable. They instantly fall for each other.

When their budding romance gets thrown off track by tragedy, will their young love be enough to sustain them? Will their relationship survive the emotional upheaval? Will they stick it out through joy and sorrow?

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Gothy Guitars for Joy and Sorrow 12 February 2016

I can't say enough good things about Maria Bernard's writing style, and particularly her Goth boys in These Bones. Admittedly, I had a preconceived notion, not sure where it came from, that Darien would be my least favorite of the bunch, but I was quite pleasantly surprised as I dug into this one, a bit in the midst of my own joy and sorrow. Maria is one of those very rare authors that I know I can count on when I need a sweet, heartfelt story with a happy ending (and those hot musicians I love so much.) I can't begin to thank Ms. Bernard enough for the comfort that brings.

We had met Faith and Darien in Falquen's Nest, but I think I can speak for everyone who has read both books that we got the wrong idea about them from that perspective. Dare I say that is true of all the boys other than Falquen? We got some surprising teases, er, insights into Gray and Jesse in this one that make me quite certain I will be digging into their stories sooner rather than later. I am still rather smitten with and intrigued by Gray, and just about as much with Jesse, but Darien really shines her in this, his and Faith's story. The reading is nothing but joy, even if a few tears may have been she'd in the moments of sorrow mentioned in the title.

I have to mention that Faith's father, Mr. Cromley, captured my heart as well and had some wonderful surprises up his sleeve. He was the secondary star in this story for sure, and is completely charming. Not that I don't adore my own father, but Mr. Cromley is written as the epitome of what every little girl dreams her father to be, and the magic has not been lost to Faith even in her mid 20's. Theirs is such a sweet and beautiful relationship. I laugh because I would apply those same words to her relationship with Darien, though in much different ways.

Darien in perfect as Faith's knight in shining, um, black leather? He is the perfect hero. While my own husband is certainly my hero, and my rockstar knight in shining tin foil, Darien is fairytale perfection for those of us whose Prince Charming's always had long hair and a guitar. He is so sweet, chivalrous, respectful, responsible, charming and genuine. Great taste in cars, houses and friends too. What more could you ask for?

One character who also captured my attention was Faith's boss, Dave - perhaps one day he could star in a spinoff?

Easily 5 romantic, sweet and sexy stars for this one. For mature audiences only for some explicit sexual situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Maria. 11 July 2015

I have always enjoyed Maria's books and the characters she creates. The men are hot and always so kind and articulate. I appreciate steamy scenes and her's are fabulously sexy, but not nasty. This story is sweet, the Goth guys are so polite and old worldly. Darien and Faith are so different, but fell so quickly for each other. He has experience with women, being in a band. Faith has none, he is her first. She is taken aback by his admission of how many one nighters he has had, but Faith soon gets over it and is thrilled by his knowledge. A brilliant book, a brilliant writer. Can't wait for more!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Joy and Sorrow is a beautiful 7 August 2015
By Kelly Gunter Atlas - Published on Amazon.com

Joy and Sorrow is a beautiful, sweet and poignant story of romance and heartache. Darien is the epitome of an old-world gentleman. Sophisticated and well-mannered, confident and charismatic, he is a classic white knight dressed all in stylish black. Faith is shy and has led a sheltered life. Although she is innocent and inexperienced, she is not naive. She has known both joy and sorrow Their story is a dance of instant connection and worlds colliding, new discoveries and old memories. It is full of joys and sorrows, hopes and dreams. It is a wonderful story of lasting love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy goths. Heartwarming story. Another great book! 16 February 2016

I enjoyed this book just as much as Falquen's nest. Similar to Janie and Falquen's relationship, Faith is mainstream and Darien is gothic. The two of them make such a sweet couple and things move pretty past between them. Faith goes through one of the toughest things in life, while also experiencing one of the best moments. Hence the name of the book, Joy and Sorrow. I really love these characters and can't wait to read the next book.

Really enjoyed this novel. Darian's story was just as complex as he is. And I love the way this author intertwines the secondary characters. Give this one a chance!
