My lip curled a bit when I reached the conclusion of this novel to find a plot twist so improbable it detracted from the story. But the journey was fun anyway.
Alex (Baron Sedgewick) is so tired of being pressure to marry that he invents a sick wife, Emmaline, who lives in the country. His ruse has worked for years until he hears that his fictional wife is now living in his city townhouse and spending his money. He tracks her down intending to kick her out, only to meet a con artist who is very attractive. Somehow his plans to get rid of her keep getting diverted.
There are some truly ghastly relatives and some great side characters in this fun tale of growing love between people from different classes. As Alex uncovers more unpleasant facts about his 'wife's' background he struggles with knowing she is unsuitable but liking the way she brings him to life.
This was very good HR but not up there with the greats.
