I enjoyed this book and feel it is quite feasible for the storyline to happen in these times of assisted parenting. I thought the ending was a little bit inconceivable though but overall it’s worth a read.

I was intrigued from the first few pages and could see that this wasn't going to be a book that I could put down, however I found towards the end it became too perfect of an ending, 3 stars

I found the book hard to put down. I don’t know when I last read a book in 2 days. A good topic that is relevant as much today as yesterday. I don’t think it was necessary to have the (few) expletives in the book, however that did not take anything away from the story. Just a lovely book to read.

This really makes you think of things that can go wrong with surrogacy, a thought provoking read, something that really needs to be approached in a legal way

Great story line, never saw the ending coming, can't wait to read more books by this author. Definitely recommend this to others, particularly those who are interested in surrogacy stories.

Some books just do it for you! For me this is one of those. It is such a wonderful narrative! It is an everyday tale, something that could happen to you or me, our next door neighbour or indeed anyone we know. Charlotte and her husband are just an ordinary couple who decide to do something extraordinary so that another less fortunate couple can share in the happiness and joy they have experienced with Alice.
Things don't go to plan and the emotional roller coaster develops apace gripping the reader and making this a page turner. I found myself to be there with them all along, feeling their emotions and hoping for a good outcome.
Not a lot is known about surrogacy. It is not a subject that is discussed everyday unless something goes wrong and hits the headlines. In this book Ruby Speechley took the subject to another level and exposed a frightening avenue that surrogate babies can go down.
The story, reactions and emotions are so realistic that at the end of the book I found myself wondering what will the Government now do to make sure this does not happen again. This feeling of 'something must be done now' speaks to the high level of the writer's research and craftsmanship.
A wonderful debut and I'm looking forward to Ruby Speechley's next offerings.

Unputdownable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2019Verified Purchase
I loved this enthralling psychological thriller by Ruby Speechley. An unputdownable thriller telling of Charlotte, a mother who acts as a surrogate for a couple who are desperate to have their own baby. But when Charlotte discovers she is having twins she becomes suspicious of the couple especially when the cheques for expenses bounce. After handing the babies over Charlotte has second thoughts.
This is an unusual take on surrogacy and the risks women take by having children for other people. Besides the obvious health issues at stake as well as emotional ones, how well do you know the people you are handing the baby over too?
A great debut read and I look forward to reading more from this author. Many thanks to NetGalley and Hera Books for the opportunity to read and review Someone Else's Baby.

Not a great read.

I thought the idea behind the book was a good one and I quite enjoyed some parts of the book, (The first half). However, there were parts that were just so unbelievable that they bordered on ridiculous. The story tells us over and over again that the couple didnt become surrogates for the money when they clearly did. They feasted on takeaways but couldn't afford decent things for their daughter? Really?? The second half of the book was rushed, the final pages crammed full of the outcome with no effort in detail. It was almost as if the author couldn't wait to get the story over with, much like myself. Quite disappointing.

Lots of unforeseen twists and turns
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 August 2019Verified Purchase
I very much enjoyed this thriller. It pulls you into Charlotte's and Steve's predicament, and how they want to trust and believe in the couple Charlotte is acting as surrogate for. The story works through several interesting moral quandaries, while at the same time increasing the tension as you become aware that Malcolm and Brenda might not be all they seem.
I also liked finding out about the whole surrogacy aspect, as I knew nothing about it prior to reading this novel.
I liked the main characters and enjoyed Charlotte and Steve's relationship - which is put under enormous strain, as is that of Charlotte and her Mum. Toddler Alice is also delightful.
The story takes a lot of unforeseen twists and turns, and you can't help but become wrapped up in Charlotte's desperate need to see her children again.
A very good first novel, and many congratulations to its author, Ruby Speechley.

Who's got your babies?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2019Verified Purchase
I’ve got to say, surrogacy isn’t for me. Whilst I was pregnant with my boys, I couldn’t wait to watch them grow up and develop. I admire the women who can go through the nine-month pregnancy and are able to hand over their baby to the intended parents. It has to be such an emotional but rewarding thing to do.
Charlotte’s character, I felt, was portrayed brilliantly. She wanted to do something amazing for a couple who had suffered in the same way her own mother had with miscarriages. Ruby Speechley has created a kind hearted character in Charlotte however, as with all people, she has her flaws which come to the forefront as the story developed.
The first half of the book has a relatively slow pace which you’d expect as this is covers Charlotte’s pregnancy. But just past the halfway point, Speechley slowly starts to tighten the screws of the thriller aspect to the book. After being dropped small seeds of doubt about Malcolm’s behaviour towards Brenda, his attitude changes and the couple disappear of the face of the earth. Malcolm is a bit of an oddball…not my cup of tea at all!!
I really enjoyed Someone Else’s Baby, it’s an excellent debut from Speechley. I’ll be keeping my eye out for her future books!
