The irony of this review is of course, that you, potential customer, may be seeking validation for purchasing or not purchasing this book based upon an averaged score of mine and all other reviews put together. Harris has something to say about this, and as with many of his examples, it might give you pause for thought.
Indeed, in purchasing this book I broke an unwritten rule of mine. I don't invest my time or money in books, or other products for that matter with a rating lower than four stars. A dear friend of mine pointed out how ridiculous this was recently when in picking movies to watch I tended to disregard anything lower than 8/10 on IMDB. I'm somewhat ashamed to say that it took this book to affirm what she had said in my mind and I now look forward to all the books this has opened me up to, and movies for that matter. Of course, we shouldn't all rush to purchase 1 star products just to exact personal choice, but averaged reviews don't always paint the permanent picture we take them for, in fact they're more like traces.
I don't agree with everything Harris says, which I suppose is vindicating given the subject matter, but I find that in general, reviewers tend to punish divergences from their own beliefs, and I find it hard to justify doing that when Harris provides perfectly sound reasoning for coming to some of the conclusions he does.
Read it and come to your own conclusion, you owe yourself that much.
