Product Description

I am not just a Man.

I am a Husband. A new father.

A Soldier.

I am Jason Reynolds.

For me, serving my country was supposed to make a better life for us all. Injured overseas, my only focus is healing for my family. When I’m given the news that my family will never be the same, I find myself drowning in pain. Talk about life being a cruel bitch.

In search of a solitary life, I take up residence in a town far from my shattered life. The Happy Endings Resort seems to be the perfect place for me to nurse my wounds. Finding a job is easy, and Brandon’s garage is the perfect place to wallow in my misery. Somehow, Brandon seems to understand my need to work until I’m exhausted, and to keep to myself. He gives me the space I need to overcome my wounds . . . all of them. Little did I know he’d have a niece.

Will these demons haunt me forever and drive me to hide from everyone and everything I’ve ever known? Will The Happy Endings Resort give me the solitude I need? Will the people here be the cure I didn’t know I was longing for?

4.0 out of 5 stars Lisa does a great job pulling you in and telling you Jason's story 16 November 2015
By Crystal Seligman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
From the very first page I knew I wasn't going to want to put this book down. Lisa does a great job pulling you in and telling you Jason's story, in an all male POV book. A soldier that has lost so much, just wants to hide away and be alone, work, exercise, and sleep. What he doesn't expect is the niece of his boss to be the lady from the diner, Dawn. He didn't want anything other then to avoid his memories and work and sleep. But Dawn had her own demons to chase away. Can he become friends with Dawn and that is all? Can he live a life with a little life actually in it? Or can he only handle solitude? This author definitely pulls you in and you feel all of the pain Jason is going through. This isn't a fast moving book, he doesn't wake up two chapters in and they are in love, no this book shows all the emotions you feel when you have lost the love of your life and you have no intention of moving on from that, and then finding someone that scares you, brings about feelings you never imagined you would feel again, and yet you still push them away because you don't want to be feeling them! I couldn't put this book down once I started that first paragraph. You will fall in love with Jason and his struggle at life, not only is he suffering the pain from losing the love of his life, but he's also a soldier that was injured and he can no longer be a soldier. Solitude is his only desire at this point, but fate has a way of stepping in and changing what we think we need and want and giving you what you need to truly live a life worth living. I wanted to give this book more stars but the only thing holding me back from a 5 star review was how abruptly the ending came. I know this is part of a series with other authors, and I don't know the whole set up, but I loved this book it was so steady throughout the whole thing and then bam it was over in a blink of an eye, it went from steady nice read to super fast ending. I just wished the ending wasn't so abrupt, but other then that this story was amazing!
5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical military book. 1 October 2015

Reviewed for A Wanton Book Lover Blog

While Jason Reynolds was proudly serving his country, his world back home was being shattered. Now out of military due to medical reasons, he is not ready to return home to all the reminders of his previous life. Jason finds himself living in the Happy Endings Resort one of his friends owns in a small town. Looking for something to take his mind off of his awful life and existence, he wonders into the local mechanic’s shop and gets a job. Jason works hard all day and exercises like a fiend at night trying to tire his mind enough to sleep through the nights without nightmares. Things are going fine until he goes to the local diner to eat and see’s her. He can’t understand his reaction to this stranger, especially with his mind still wrapped-up in his life and family before his service. Jason can’t deny he feels something for the waitress Dawn, so he gets the heck out of the diner. Jason later finds out that Dawn is his boss’s niece. Regardless of what he tries, Jason can’t get Dawn out of his mind. The two eventually become close and Jason must decide if he can give Dawn what she is looking for while she is dealing with her own demons.

A Solder’s Dawning was not your typical military-based novel. Jason was really struggling with not only what he saw and/or did while in the military, but also personal loss. I dare to say this isn’t your typical guy meets girl, girl heals guy, and they live HEA. This doesn’t make this book “bad” but really different; it was a fresh-take on surviving what life has dealt you with and trying to move on, even when you are scared to death. Both Dawn and Jason had horrible things happen to them but together, we see if they can find the strength to move on together while at the same time begin a new relationship. This book was well written story dealing with horrible circumstances and events. It was emotional and passionate but remained realistic. I loved it.

Where do you turn when all you have left is grief and pain?

It is frightening to put pen to paper how we tend to forget how our veterans lose themselves when they come home from war, from tragedy and from losing a part of their souls, not to mention their brothers in arms. You’d think that when you pick up Lisa Survillas’ novel it would be an arrogant, hothead and rude ex-military man who meets a beautiful woman who changes his ways, only to discover that instead she writes a novel that hits close to home ever since troops from all over the globe have been sent from one place to another for a dispute that either was or was not of their own, and to defend their country. How many times can someone feel their tears flowing down their eyes while reading a novel?? I simply stopped counting and went through an entire box of kleenex while being comforted by my husband who had no idea why I was crying in the first place. You can’t help but feel connected to not only the subject, but the obstacles that Jason goes through and root for him to fight through, to find comfort in any way possible and jump up in the air as you feel the connection between the characters. Do I recommend this novel? Absolutely, because any reader willing to support any type of cause they believe in, can surely take some time to feel what courage, love and fighting true demons really are.

Jason served his country with honor. But an injury has him waking up in a hospital learning that life will never be the same.

(Getting out of bed gets harder and harder each day. Hearing
them tell me I’d never be able to do my job again was horrible,
but being forced into retirement killed me. And yet, somehow
the news got worse. That was when I truly felt dead.)

Learning his family was forever changed forced him into seclusion. How could he live again when his reason for living was gone? A gun shot stole his career and an accident stole his family.

(My life is over. A gunshot wound to the shoulder missed its mark.
Clearly it was meant for my heart, and now that’s being rectified.)

He wants nothing to do with anyone. He wants solitude, to spend his days and nights remembering the only real love he had. But instead of becoming another statistic Jason goes out and finds a job as a mechanic. There he can avoid talking to anyone. He spends his days working on cars and his nights with memories. When even those don’t help he runs on the beach. Anything to put the memories behind him.

(“As much as I love watching you sleep. I want to spend the last few
hours with you in my arms.”
Jason)

But life has a funny way of changing things. Jason quickly becomes finds himself spending time with his boss’s niece, Dawn. He doesn’t want to hurt her or let her in. But he’s drawn to her like a moth to a flame.

When he goes away one weekend to find an escape from his thoughts of his past life and of Dawn, he runs into her. And from that meeting he embarks on forming a friendship, one he doesn’t think he wants with her. But soon he realizes that she wants more and he doesn’t believe he can give that to anyone, especially Dawn. He feels like he is doomed to live a life of solitude.

Dawn’s pas is just as heartbreaking. So much of what causes her to be cautious is similar to why Jason is who he is now. Dawn knows that if they are to more forward and explore what is clearly evident between them she must tell him of her past. He knows the time has come, he must do the same, he must tell someone about his past. Both of them have pasts that haunt them. Both have hearts that aren’t complete.

(“Our two broken hearts could easily melt together into
one fully functioning love story.”
-Dawn)

Is it time for life, his life to move on. It’s time for her to move forward. Can he take the risk? Can she?

(“But what if we don’t? What if I break the rest of your
heart? I’m not sure I could live with myself if I
knew I did that.”
-Jason)

I started this book one night and made it less than 10% in before I was crying. I knew I’d have to go back and start again. I read it two times in a row to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Both times I was bawling.

Jason broke my heart at the start, but slowly mended it. This was a gut-wrenching book that was full of emotions. I will be in a book hangover for a few days. But it was worth everything I went through to get to the end. To see if two broken souls could mend each other and become one.

Lisa is an incredible story teller. I felt like I was right there with the characters, living what they were living. They were so real to me, I wanted to hug Jason. Lisa has quickly become a must read author for me.

Anything inside of () is a quote or line from the book. Unfortunately it won't post the way I had it written.
