The first book in this series, Nolander, was quite good. Certainly good enough to prompt me to purchase this book.
What a disappointment. It was more of a travelogue than a gripping story despite some small dramas along the way. It became so boring that I kept stopping to do something else. Beth, the main character, was full of angst, constantly questioning who she was and who everyone else thought she was.
Very much a poor me situation. "Oh dear, I have this power inside me and I don't know what to do with it". Everybody around her were either unwilling or unable to help her gain control of other aspects of her gift and she didn't make any attempt to do so herself.
It wasn't until the end of the book that the gift finally manifested itself and something interesting happened. An awfully long journey of nothing for a slightly interesting occurrence.
Throughout the book the author kept bringing our attention to the fact that Beth wanted to have friends and not be alone whereas Williams kept drumming it into her that she had to isolate herself from others, as if she was a strong power. On the other hand he treated her like an idiot.
If the next book is like this one I don't think I'll bother. Sad because Nolander had so much potential.
I leave it up to the reader to agree or disagree.
