Other reviewers have suitably summarised the plot so there's no sense in repeating that. I like the way the author introduces the characters and gradually exposes their personality as the book progresses; you feel you are gradually getting to know them better. I also like the way she addresses different belief systems (or lack of them) sympathetically and sensitively, without the anti-religious rants which spoil some SF.
Others have commented on the slow pace of the book, but I found that this wasn't an issue for me as I followed the natural and gentle development of the relationships between the various characters. The transition between a story which seems to be Fantasy to one with an SF background is intriguing and well done.
Starts off slow but slowly as the story, characters and world are fleshed out it builds up pace.
The story writing it excellent, some minor annoyances such as some-one and any-thing but other than that very well written..
Whilst some parts you may think are predictable this book holds many surprises.
All in all a great read
