Product Description

Newly broke girl Alexandria Asher just wants to live a normal life. After her parents are sent to prison on embezzlement charges, she enrolls in college under her mother’s maiden name and tries her best to pretend she’s someone else.

Tristan Prescott is everything Alex is trying to avoid. A seemingly egotistical, lazy, rich jerk, she dumps her beer on his head when he comes on to her one night at a party. This only spurs Tristan into action. He loves nothing more than a challenge. And the beautiful Alex is exactly the type of challenge that intrigues him.

Despite her reluctance, Alex finds herself quickly involved with Tristan. Underneath that playboy exterior is a good guy, a sweet and sexy guy who she is undoubtedly falling for. What they both don’t realize is the actions of Alex’s parents are the reason for so much tragedy in Tristan’s family. And when Tristan discovers who Alex and her family really is, can he forgive and forget?

I was just so excited to read another most amazing book to this fabulous series, The Rules. The third story, Slow Play brings us the most truly romantic story about Tristan and Alex. I loved this astounding story both bringing two opposites together. I could not put this book down.

We meet Alexandria Asher out one night. She was on the dance floor just trying to forget all her troubles. She was happier now after she'd now met Jade and her boyfriend Shep. They then also meet his best friend Gabe who now dates Lucy.

When she eventually meets Shep's cousin, the one and only Tristan Prescott, she is just so turned off. His crass rude language just makes her want to get far away from him too, yet Tristan just couldn't keep his eyes off her that night. He was is love.

Such the most amazing romantic story. How two complete opposites can come together. I was so completely thrilled by this beautiful love story. Well done once again Monica Murphy. I thoroughly adored this most bittersweet story! It was the best!

* I recommend this book to everyone!

This is my favourite of the series. Tristan is a little annoying and complicated and some times i just want to slap him in the face but he loves fiercely and in the end i loved him too. Alex is strong and holds her cards close to her chest, she too at times is annoying but she is a worthy heroine in the story and a perfect match for Tristan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly told story... 12 October 2016

I liked how this story continued with the Halloween party ending from the last book.. In The Dark (The Rules Book 2). And I liked 21 y/o Alexandria Mcintosh Asher's personality/character. She's very independent & sassy. She comes from wealth & is accustomed to finer things in life. Since her parents went broke, she's managed to adjust to being thrifty.

I loved poor, miserable, wealthy rich kid, Tristan Prescott. He goes through life with a moody, grouchy attitude. He's good looking and hawt & he knows it. He's bitter because his cousin (Shepard Prescott <from book #1> Fair Game (The Rules Book 1)) & Gabe (from book#2) have found love & hung up their man-whorish reps., & it all just makes Tristan wanna gag. The three musketeers are no more...Tristan is now the Lone Ranger & he's not going to let some girl lasso him. No siree...ain't gonna happen. And then he meets the one girl who completely immobilizes him. His mouth goes dry and he can't breathe.

I just loved this story...which surprises me because I don't usually gravitate to College Preppie love stuff or Y/A stories. But this story roped me in. Tristan is such an arrogant, cocky a-hole. He never, NEVER chases girls. Nope...girls chase HIM. They grovel & fall at his feet. They proposition him. He has a whole flock of girls surrounding him all the time. His Harem. Except for Alex. She doesn't do any of those things...and it cracked me up, how confused she made him. Him seeing her reminded me of the 1942 Walt Disney movie, "Bambi"....when Thumper the rabbit, is disgusted with all his friends falling in love, until he get's "twitter-pated" too. It's all sweetly hilarious. Tristan was such a prick...never sorry for what he does, what he says, or who he is. He expects everyone to overlook his MANY faults because he's an a-hole. That's his excuse. He's an unhappy child....a brat without manners. He simply "takes" without regrets. He doesn't care about hurt feelings. He doesn't care about anything. Yet I loved him because he's a guy going through life afraid of trusting anyone...afraid of rejection, so he becomes an untouchable, pompous ass who never feels worthy. He kinda' broke my heart. I liked how this story was all about the chase and not all about sex...which I love too. But sometimes sex can overwhelm the story. This story didn't do that. Oh there's plenty of sex scenes, but it's not all about that. This was about attaining a conquest, yes, but also about a young woman who's lived most of her life with a false sense of security; believing everything was fine, when in reality her world was collapsing. It's about a young man's awakening. It's a brilliantly told story.

I'm giving this three stars because while it made no pretensions at being great literature, it really wasn't amazing.

The third in what seems to be a trilogy, I jumped in at this book because it was recommended through Bookbub on sale, and I also got the audible version (which I thought was quite cute).

It's just honestly not a stunning story. Cute 'King of the School' Tristan meets ex-rich girl 'Alexandria' who is "Not His Usual Type I Swear," and from the moment their eyes clash across the room they are smitten. But Alexandria has a Dark Past, and Tristan's is no cakewalk, plus he was a douche to her, and has been generally labelled a 'Man Whore' by Everyone, so there are the usual barriers to their union. The writing is decent and they have some cute chemistry and flirtation, though some of the dialogue is absolutely cringe-worthy. The author tries too hard to have Tristan come off as rude and uncouth and just has him say all these kind of nutty things about "I know you want my big D," which like, a) do THAT many people really say that in real life, and b) are THAT many women really willing to then overlook it, and finally c) how does a guy with a line like that become this alleged sex-god?

His lack of game is never really explained -- he dresses up in a purple pimp suit for the halloween party, and yet somehow he's still stunningly attractive?

Full disclosure: I didn't finish the book, because it did get boring and the sex wasn't sexy enough for me, but it wasn't poorly written so I can't truly lampoon it. If you're looking for a trashy read and you like this trope, by all means, this is for you. If you like a slightly more edgy feminist romance with a little more explosive chemistry, this may leave you desiring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally Tristans Story!!! 4 November 2015

Finally we get Tristan's story! I've been wanting to get to know this man since book one, and was so excited to finally read his story and meet the girl that takes him out of his playboy lifestyle.

When Alexandria first meets Tristan she's attracted to him, but then he goes and opens his big mouth and things go down hill from there. These two do not get along and always seem to be annoyed and irritated with one another, but the attraction is undeniable. Seeing Tristan give Gabe and Shep so much crap for falling in love, it was hilarious to see him fight it tooth and nail when it came to Alexandria.

Alexandria has a past, one she's not proud of, and she's trying to move on from the things her parents did. When she meets Kelli and in turn Jade, Lucy, Shep, and Gabe she finally feels as if she belongs. She keeps her past a secret, but moves on and learns to enjoy her life. Being friends with who she's friends with makes it extremely difficult to ignore Tristan. She wants something more than what Tristan is known for, and isn't about to play his games. She knows he's dangerous for her heart and decides to take the safer route. When things heat up between these two, it is definitely HOT and I adored seeing them navigate through their non "relationship" of just being "friends".

Everyone around them could see how they felt about one another, but Tristan fought his feelings tooth and nail, and Alexandria was afraid to speak up and tell him how she felt. I wish Tristan wouldn't have been so afraid of how he felt about Alexandria. He was so different with her, and became a better person. Tristan was still the foul mouthed man, but no longer the playboy we've come to know. He had eyes for only one girl, and didn't see that even though he didn't want it, he was in a relationship.

When things come to a head in this book I wanted to scream at Tristan. He lashed out and I was surprised that Alexandria didn't slap him. I really didn't think that these two would be able to move past the words that were said and the secrets that had come out, but to say I loved how things ended for them would be an understatement. I really adored this book along with this series. Tristan went from the one that I wasn't so sure of to my favorite of the three men in this series. I just wish we would have gotten more of an ending/epilogue for how all of these characters ended up in the long term. Hopefully one day we can get an extended ending for this series, as I have fallen in love with all of these characters. If you're looking for a New Adult romance that will have you laughing out loud, and is full of angst, I highly suggest picking up Slow Play today, and all of The Rules series if you haven't read them yet!

4.0 out of 5 stars Completely enjoyable and touching read. 17 February 2016

I love the way Monica Murphy writes. You always get a great love story with the right amount of angst and characters that are unforgettable.

With Slow Play I loved the slow burn. The way both Tristan and Alex held their ground, when trying to resist the chemistry between them yet knowing the attraction was real. Tristan as the true player, the man who doesn't get close to any woman just can't shake the image of Alex from his mind. She is very different from those he usual pursues and watching as he struggles to become the kind of man she might actually like was extremely touching.

They share a past that neither one is aware of and it's only a matter of time before the proverbial shoe will drop. I liked the way both characters took their time in wanting more from the other and seeing that their backgrounds didn't allow them to forgo giving this romance a try.

Tristan is one wonderful book boyfriend and his patience with Alex made me swoon. There is the right amount of steam and combined with tender moments, this was a truly good read.

I look forward to playing catch up and reading the others in the series since both the other couples are prominent in this book. They all certainly have a tale to tell as well.

Well worth your time.
3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars--push and pull 9 January 2017

3.5 stars---SLOW PLAY is the third installment in Monica Murphy’s contemporary, new adult THE RULES romance series focusing on a tight night group of college friends. This is Tristan Prescott, and Alexandria Asher’s story line. SLOW PLAY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person points of view (Tristan and Alexandria) SLOW PLAY focuses on the building relationship between two college students –Tristan Prescott and Alexandria Asher. Tristan’s reputation as a manwhore precedes his introduction to Alexandria Asher. His acerbic personality, rude comments, and childish behavior are three strikes against our story line hero that continue to grow throughout the series. Alexandria Asher is a young woman who once had it all but her parent’s fall from grace has left Alexandria struggling to make it on her own. Meeting Tristan Prescott pushes all of her buttons because she is attracted to the man who gets on her nerves. What ensues is the growing love between two people who keep secret their dark and heartbreaking pasts where lies, betrayal and secrets will come to the surface and destroy everything they had together.

The attraction between Tristan and Alexandria is immediate but Alex has a difficult with Tristan’s less than appropriate behavior and sexual come-ons. Tristan is a man who goes for what he wants and he wants Alex in his bed and between the sheets. He is cocky and self centered; extremely gifted when it comes to the woman in his life. He is not looking for a relationship and in this the struggle between Tristan and Alex continues to grow. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense.

All of the previous story line couples play secondary and supporting characters including Jade and Shep (Fair Game #1), and Gabe and Lucy (In the Dark #2), as well as an assortment of friends, roommates and potential love interests.

The world building continues to focus on the love lives of several college friends. There is a wide assortment of personalities that allows for a continuous growth in the character development. There are several references to ‘Sex in the City’ and if you are a fan you will recognize most if not all.

SLOW PLAY is a sexy and intimate story; the push and pull of heartbreak and passion. The premise is enjoyable and pleasant ; the characters are passionate and animated; the romance is tender and encouraging.
