As far as zombie(ish) post-apocalyptic fiction goes this is pretty standard fare, but with a few tweaks that make it that bit more interesting. The action is structured in the usual way: Set the scene, 'Event' happens, brief emotional interlude, action, lull, action, lull, emotional guff, action...and so on. So far, so predictable - but there is a slight twist: whether by accident or by design the lead character is *enormously* frustrating. Emotionally volatile, unpredictable, downright pig headed, shrill and jaw-droppingly self centred at times she is possibly the single most annoying heroine ever written - but for all of that at least she's different: she's not the type of ex-military survivalist nutjob / alpha male / loser-come-good the genre is littered with, which is to be commended.
What's not to be commended is the occasionally appalling standard of spelling in the book. I know that for some people this seems an undue and unfair criticism but if you're writing a book, especially an e-book, there is absolutely no excuse for not spell checking and getting someone (almost anyone older than 7 years old who has some level of literacy)to have a quick look over it. If I see the word 'lose' (as in "Put this in your pocket so you don't lose it") spelt l-o-o-s-e again I'm going to hunt the author down and force feed them every page the letter L has to offer in the biggest dictionary I can find.
The action moves along at a fair clip and will keep you interested up until the slightly unorthodox ending. Without giving too much away it is a very different, if slightly absurd, ending that again provides something of a change. It could have been done a bit better I felt (but then I've never written more than a review, so who am I to criticise?), but on the whole was an intersting and engaging diversion from the norm.
So...3 stars it is. I couldn't give it 5 stars, partly because I found the narrator so deeply objectionable but mainly because the lack of spelling and grammar started to really get on my wick by the end. A worthwhile story (and well worth the price, for all its faults), just try not to 'loose' your patience with it.
