Probably one of the best books I have ever read on galleons and pirates with lots of twists in the plot. The splendour of Algiers, Malta and Venice skilfully captured a bygone era of the old trading days with captivating characters. A whirl-wind ride of well resarched historical facts that you don't normally hear about in countries not many of us have had the chance to visit. I am an Marine Archivist and History Buff but so many books written while fiction are poorly researched but not this time! Be prepared for a turbulent world of ciphers, spies and assassinations and the reality that the slave trade was not only from Africa. Tom a young man of 15yrs. shows how he copes with diversity and the iniquitous assault on his life. An uplifting, intelligent adventure suitable for all ages from teens upwards, it will spark curiosity and keep readers enthralled.
Great rollicking yarn, spread across Britain, North Africa and Europe. Lots of adventures, villains and deeds of derring-do. If this sounds a bit like a "Boy's Own" type of book, it is far from it. It is seriously well researched book with well developed characters, an interesting storyline, and very satisfying conclusion.
Highly recommended for lovers of historical fiction based on real events.
Malta is something else, go visit & stay for at least a month, if you can spare more time do so my husband is totally wrapped in the HISTORY & Valletta . Venice your heart will stop, steep in history more then you think . Algiers I think I need to visit ... until now never knew much. After reading this book one should broaden their minds. Travel the world threw books is the way to also learn more about life & history.
Having read (devoured) many seafaring books of the 16th and 17th centuries I found this to be refreshingly different. It has adventure, good guys and villains, wonderful descriptions of the places and times and is a self contained novel that draws to a satisfying conclusion. And you must read the end notes.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the historical information therein. It gives such balance and apparent good judgement of People, politics and the lives of different people's of the times. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
