This is by far the worst product I have of theirs.
I would go as far as to say that it is dangerous and should be recalled.
I originally purchased this in October when my son started daycare. He goes two days a week. That is TWO DAYS a week that this product is used, and we have always hand washed this.
By December the lid had started to crack. I returned this to Amazon and they were amazing. They replaced the lunch kit right away!!
Fast forward one month (count it... That is EIGHT USES) and the lid broke again. This time not just a crack, the plastic on the inside of the lid seal broke off and left a super sharp shard of clear plastic in my sons food. I thank all my lucky stars that it didn't get swallowed and we didn't end up in the ER.
Skip Hop: please recall and re-design this so I can continue to be a customer. It is really not safe.. The plastic of the lid is too rigid, and cracks and splinters way too easily. It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt if they haven't already.
However where this fails is in build quality. After only two months, the plastic nub that one of the handles hinges on broke off, so now that handle can't seal and I have to hold it together with a rubber band. I may see if I can bore out a hole and replace the tab with a wooden dowel, but that's a lot of work for a lunchbox and it could easily have been avoided by just using a metal rod instead of plastic for that part, or simply using a larger plastic nub.
As designed, there is a lot of pressure and twisting torque applied to the small plastic tabs, so it is not surprising that it didn't last long in the hands of a child. If this were a product marketed to adults, then it would be reasonable to expect them to be more careful and not break the plastic tab, but it is clearly for children, so more attention to potentially breakable parts is needed. For this reason I have to rate this only a three star product.
Pros: Wonderful cheerful colours and bee pattern. Easy to clean. Easy for toddlers to open.
Cons: not built robust enough for the advertised use by children.
After owning this for 1 month, it has broken. My toddler pulled it off the counter and it fell on the floor (bound to happen). A piece of the inner plastic rim that holds in the gasket has broken off (see photo of underside of ladybug lid). It still latches shut, but I would not trust it to be leak-proof any more. I will probably not replace it, but buy more of the: http://www.amazon.com/EasyLunchboxes-3-Compartment-Bento-Containers-Classic/dp/B004S129AQ
_____Previous Notes____Cute, but shows wear____
-The plastic top image shows internal cracks in the plastic immediately, but does not appear to affect function. (see photo of side view of ladybug lid)
-I have not had any leaking issues.
-The top image paint scrapes off too. (see photo of bumble bee image - after a few more uses, the ladybug lid has similar scrapes)
-I put it in the top rack of the dishwasher after every use.
-It fits easily inside a Skip Hop lunch bag (and leaves enough room for a pouch, or a yogurt, or little cup of fruit).
-I put cut up veggies (or fruit) in the small container (have also used it for chili, no problem) and the "entree" in the main compartment (sandwich halves, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, pizza, etc.).
-I usually throw a "EasyLunchboxes Mini Dippers Small Dip, Condiment, or Sauce Container, Leak-Resistant" with fruit (or veggies) in the main compartment with the entree. It almost always fits nicely and the top of the lunch box still seals well. And as I use the Skip Hop lunch bags too, there is room for both the Mini Dipper (or two) and the Skip Hop box.
-I use this 1-2 times a week for daycare lunches, alternating with the "EasyLunchboxes 3-Compartment Bento Lunch Box Containers" which surprisingly, also fit inside a Skip Hop lunch bag.
-It's super cute and still holds little toddler lunches well.
-My 2 year old loves her ladybug.
-My 1 year old son loves his bumble bee version.
So overall I liked it. However, I've bought two of them and within two months both lids cracked near the handle. The bottom of the case is a flexible plastic (similar to a Rubbermaid item) but the lid is a harder plastic. However the lid is a harder plastic than the bottom so it is not flexible so anytime you lift the handles to open, it puts pressure on the plastic until eventually it cracks, even with minimal use. Great customer service but unfortunately the new one probably won't last more than a few months either. Unless they change they lid plastic, I wouldn't buy again.
