I loved all the characters in this story -- protagonists Ginger and Sin, with brother Chris in his trusted role. Ginger was determined, strong, and with a hidden vulnerability; Sin was confident, persuasive, twisted; and Chris was clever, manipulative, loving -- all products of dark childhoods. And all had secret agendas. One of the most appealing elements of the story was the scarred antihero rendered so compelling, so sexy as to feel drawn to him, attracted to him. Sin was simply hot! And so was the chemistry. The love scenes was very spicy.
A big fan of the pace, on the fast side, but did not feel rushed. Sufficient world and character building for full immersion. Tumultuous, cunning, with such magnetism, I often wrestled with my feelings about the characters and their misdeeds. And beautifully enough with the author's writing talent, I was able to resolve myself with the outcome. This was favorite book, on the darker side and an excellent read.
Now that that’s out of the way, I enjoyed the book. Ginger is the tough female lead that you often hope to find in romance novels but never seem to. I’ve read a lot of romances where the tough girl turns into a submissive weakling that basically bows down and does whatever the male lead wants. Ginger isn’t one of those girls. She stands her ground all through the book. She’s solid and consistent, and I love that about her.
Sin, on the other hand, there isn’t much to say about him. He’s pretty much your typical bad boy that you can find in numerous other romance books. There’s nothing unique about him. He’s big, he’s tough, and he gets turned on at the drop of a hat. He does have a few layers but overall, he’s just your average tough guy male character. You either like him or you don’t.
I liked the story. It kept me entertained the whole way through. It had a great flow and everything seemed to fall into place. There’s a few twists and turns that would have been fun but were spoiled by the triggers list in the opening of the book. If you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read the triggers. They pretty much tell you everything that is going to happen.
If you like horror, you’ll probably enjoy this book. If you like happy rainbows and you can’t stand blood and gore, do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Triggers: dubcon, incest, human trafficking, knife play, miscarriage
Not for me. I've read some pretty dark stuff with all the triggers mentioned above, but this was just too over the top for me. I had a hard time connecting with the heroine with her complete lack of humanity, despite her past. Still, the story was well written, hence the 3 1\2 stars.
