This was a good ya book although I was very close to putting it down in chapter 3 when the temperature was "100 degrees, walking a "mile" and catching the "yellow school bus" all occurred one after the other, as the book is set in Queensland, Australia and we are metric like 90% of the world and don't have yellow school buses like the do in USA. I'm glad I continued as it was an enjoyable story. The strand being in different places on each person was a nice touch. The cane toad was good too.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was simple, easy to read, action packed (e.g. dragons, exciting mesura chase scenes and a race against time), engaging and contains real world problems (e.g. traitorous leaders and environment destroying for profits) whilst being an immersive fantasy story that I couldn't put down.
"just a few more pages..." 4 hours later... "OH whoops I need to go to sleep.... ill just finish this page.."

I highly recommend for middle grade kids through to adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Cool & Unique (=^.^=)~ 2 September 2015
By Caroline - Published on Amazon.com

I am nine years old and I think this book is AWESOME!!! One day in the story, Isabelle is playing sports and gets hit by a ball and she starts bleeding pink dust! Then her hair sprouts a ‘granny hair’ even though she was only twelve years old! And in science class, Isabelle figures out that the silver hair is actually made out of actual real silver & might be even magical.

And there’s a vain talking cat called Boldrick with a silver whisker, just like Isabelle. I thought he was funny and can picture him with his posh English saying that his hair is like a Da Vinci canvas and he even has a fur ball problem before going into the tunnel, maybe because of all his over fur cleaning just like my cat Princess Fluffy. Oh and I can’t stop thinking about Boldrick’s vanilla hair gel and fringe and I thought that was funny but don’t think my cat would like hair gel like Boldrick does. (=^.^=)~

There are lots of funny parts, too, I like how its written and the funny things that are said by Bianca like “horse mite” & Isabella like “Warterella” and what Esme says reminds me of my teacher last year, she would have loved the Agartha stuff and I think that would be cool if it was real because it would help the planet heaps.

This book is well written and I found it really easy to picture what was happening and what the characters were like. It even made super gross toad cuisine, Isabella was eating seem super yummy but thought the parts about Mozzy’s toad family members was very sad. Everything about the story is interesting like the magical stuff, Agartha tech and the cheeky stuff they said.

Oh yeah and Isabelle has to pass three tests. The silver strand she has had it’s magic drained and now Isabelle has only five days to live, and she gets turned into a toad and that’s when things start to get dangerous and I don’t wait to spoil it for anyone by saying more about the story.

This book is really really awesome, unique and has lots of super cool interesting stuff and tons of funny surprises!!
~~~(=^.^=) = Boldrick the cat
5.0 out of 5 stars the author mixes the right amount of magic and of being a kid into a quality read 8 September 2015
I bought this book for my granddaughter. She is almost eight and when I read the book description, I knew she would love it. I started skimming it when I downloaded it for her and ended up reading it myself.
As a retired teacher and as a grandparent, I was more than pleased with the story. The author mixes the right amount of magic and being a kid into a quality read. I'm a huge fan of the Percy Jackson stories and as with that series, I see a solid story line that kids will enjoy reading and will follow.
In this day and age, with so many children not voluntarily reading as they did before, when you find a gem like this book, it stands out.
Definitely recommend and suggest buying a second copy for your child's classroom library. I'm sure teachers would be pleased to have this author's books in the classroom.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to an interesting series 22 August 2015
Isabelle feels awkward in her school, as it is for some teens. Her best friend Bianca does her best to stand up for her because she sees something special in Isabelle. They discover how special she is when a gym class accident brings about pink dust and a silver strand. In attempts to remove the strand that makes her feel freakier than usual, she finds out that it is the source of her magical power within. Now that it is damaged, she has five days to complete three tests or else she loses her powers and her life. This is an interesting book about learning about magic you were born with (think Harry Potter), but developing your identity in a journey of self-discovery. Each setting during her tests are creative and imaginative as she is prepared for the dangers she faces. The characters are often funny with their banter. This is an engaging and exciting book for Tweens and teens. Looking forward to the next books in the Mastermind Academy series.
I do not often copy another reviewer, but as stated " 'This was one of the best middle grades books I have read in a while! It was intelligent, fun, engaging, unpredictable, and beautiful!' " I agree and would have loved to have this series in my Montessori Adolescent classroom. You will love the characters and their shenanigans and while some may say it is a satire, others will say it is an easy Potteresque book set. Read it, laugh and enjoy the antics of these fine characters.
4.0 out of 5 stars It is interesting enough to be enjoyed by adults and children 23 April 2017
This was a very enjoyable middle grade story about a 12 year old child coming into her magical inheritance. It is interesting enough to be enjoyed by adults and children. There are real worries when Isabelle turns into a toad and must hide from her toad killing father. The science and environmental concerns are very well done. Boldrick, the man that was turned into a speaking cat until he can break the curse certainly added humor. I would recommend this to any one.
