After the successful conclusion of the case in The Cuckoo's Calling, the services of private detective Cormoran Strike are in big demand. Most of the cases are the usual estranged husband and wife with one suspecting the other of cheating. The story of a middle-aged woman whose husband has gone missing takes Strike's fancy. Her husband is an obscure writer, whose latest novel has caused consternation with his agent and publisher. The latter refuses to publish the novel because of the potentially libellous content. After some initial investigation, Strike stumbles on the body of the writer, who has been murdered in horrific fashion. The police accuse the wife of the murder, but Strike is not convinced they have the right person. So with the aid of his assistant, Robin, Strike follows the clues to establish the identity of the killer.
I think this book is a great follow-up to The Cuckoo's Calling. The twists and turns kept me guessing all the way to the end. In my opinion, Rowling has improved her mastery of the genre, which augurs well for future instalments to this series. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
