Product Description

For over a year, Miss Gwendolyn Parkes and the Duke of Sowrith have corresponded. At first an error, the letters quickly became something much more—a friendship forged on like minds and perhaps the hope of something more….

When Gwen is compelled by her employer to attend the duke at his Dartmoor estate, she is devastated to find her beloved friend cold and imperious, even if he is the most handsome man she’s ever seen—despite his scars.

Edward, Duke of Sowrith, has longed to meet Gwen. After arranging her passage to his estate, he is tongue-tied when confronted with her quiet beauty. All too aware of the twisted ruin of his face, he allows fear to hold him silent…until Gwen’s safety is threatened.

Finally together, they grow closer until it seems they can never again be apart. But can a commoner and a duke find a happily ever after?

Oh My Gosh! Why didn’t anyone tell me about this series! This novella has two of my absolute favorite tropes, Epistolary romance and a Beta hero, all wrapped up in a delightful love story. I was charmed by the unfolding friendship between Gwen Parkes and Edward, Lord Sowrith through their letters back and forth. It was very easy to see how the correspondence gave them both an outlet to be themselves rather than behaving as their social classes would dictate.

Gwen was truly a strong character for pushing past Edward’s fears to find the passionate man she had fallen for. Her drive to draw Edward out of his shell allowed them the find the intimacy they had shared through their letters and bring it into the real world. The author does touch on the ideas of class barriers and women’s rights within the Victorian age, but they are never heavy-handed so as to remove the reader from the fantasy of these two lonely souls finding one another.

The novella’s length did work against it as far as fully developing both characters. I would have loved more backstory about Edward’s accident, Gwen’s struggles to find work in the field she loved and more development of their romance once they had met face to face. I also felt there was a need for secondary characters that interacted with the main characters more than just Gwen’s prejudiced boss. They could have added dimension to the story rather than just the single string that we followed to the end.

All that considered, I would highly recommend this novella to anyone looking for a sweet romance to pass a few hours with.

Sweet and heart warming. A lovely read. I loved the letters setting up the relationship, and the vulnerability. And, I appreciate the vulnerability of the hero. I wish one line had been included....Call me Edward, no one has called me Edward since I was 12 years old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Endearing and Fun Novella 13 June 2015

This was a quick, fun and romantic read. I really enjoyed the banter between Gwen and Edward. I also liked how straightforward they were with each other. It was such a nice change from the dreaded communication angst in so many romantic books. It's definitely swoonworthy but has no sex scenes which I appreciated. This is a delightful book but it's only 102 pages which makes it a little over priced. It made me so happy that I got over it.
